• HTPC - What's the way to go?

Well my dad came up to me with a question. He wanted to watch Netflix / Blu-Ray and watch and record TV and all that good stuff on our HD TV. I've read up on some stuff and I don't know exactly what I want. Parts and what not. Budget around $650 for everything and what programs are good for everything? I know how to build computers, but I'm curious on how to set up everything such as software and remotes and all that crap. Any help would be nice. Thank you.

2 Gb RAM, all-in-wonder, Athlon II X2, that cheap Coolermaster PSU, decent high capacity hard drive, decent mobo bluray drive. Either XP MCE or Linux Mint for the OS. If I had some more details, I could help some more. Is your hdtv HDMI, DVI, etc; do you have any parts you would like to reuse; what country are you in, etc.
California US. I have no parts and its HDMI.

Will all that do everything I need? Is there another software I need for it and what does MythTV cover?
it will do pretty much everything
You'll probably want to buy a good remote for it too, so you don't have to get up frequently.
I use MEdiaportal On an nlited XP - Let's me distribute TV around the house over the network =) - Plays back bluray and timeshifts HDTV over a network without issues. Getting HD playback in mythtv variants is irritating at best. - Not to mention getting tuner cards that work.. Plus who would want a HTPC that can't play a few games?! Been there, tried it... I've tried EVERYTHING, MythTV, Sage TV, Mediaportal, MCE, WMC, WMC Fiji update.... SesamTV TVedia. Nothing really integrated with HD playback properly - Mediaportal, Being opensource and a community driven operation has meant that direct codec support is simple and works. - Took all of 10 minutes to get a bluray film to play Another thing, The latest ATI Drivers seem to have broken Bluray+HDVD playback Even With a fully HDCP compliant setup OR with AnyDVD, I roled back to 8.5 and it solved a large portion of stuttering issues and non-functioning playback. Rate me dumb all you want, I speak from experience.
