So here's my predicament;
I have two graphics cards I want to run in the same PC.
The first is my primary card a GTX 275
The second is a ATI X800xl
PC Specs: Vista 64bit, Asus P6T mobo, OCZ 700 PSU, i7 920.
What I am trying to do is have it so that I can launch my PC in a low power mode using the X800
when I'm just surfing or viewing movies and such, and save my GTX 275 for editing and gaming.
So how can I turn one off without removing it from the PC? (that would be a constant hassle).
Oh and I've already tried simply unplugging the GTX 275, that just makes the PC fail to post, even with the
video cable attached to the X800
In no way am I trying to combine these cards power, I want to be able to start my PC using one but not the other, while leaving both still in
my system.
Anyone got any ideas?
No, ATI, can use Crossfire, nVidea, can use SLI, but you can't mix and match AFAIk.

Did you even read my post?
I'm having ideas in my head about an on/off switch for the 2 x 6 Pin connector, but it wouldn't really be plausible.
Why don't you try software underclocking the GTX 275 to something low for your low-power mode
Did you even read my post?
The first part, i suppose i'll read the rest.
[editline]09:27AM[/editline]
Also, no, you can't AFAIK.

Yes, you can. You can't combine the power of both cards, but you can certainly have 2 GPUs from both ATI and NVIDIA and have a monitor for each

Because even underclocked it still uses more power than my X800, hell the X800 doesn't even
need a power dongle.
Hm...let me think for a bit...

That's not what i was meaning, i was meaning having them share the load, but i suppose you could do that.

...
That's really really dumb, and being an idiot like this will only get your computer fried.
Use common sense, you don't need an X800 for browsing the web, that's what your GTX 275 is for, don't be an idiot.
You cannot run 2 driver packages together.
The GTX 275 in idle will no use much power at all
Yes, you can. You can't combine the power of both cards, but you can certainly have 2 GPUs from both ATI and NVIDIA and have a monitor for each
But could I have one monitor and switch the video cable? Because I can't seem to get
the PC to start unless I supply power to both cards, which sorta of defeats the purpose.
Why don't you try underclocking the GTX 275 and using that in Low Power mode, regardless of the fact that X800 uses more power

I'm not really sure how that will get the computer fried, and I don't like being called dumb. Obviously I unplugged the card before powering on the PC, and using two driver packages runs fine, my question is how can I power off one card while leaving both in the system...
[editline]01:34AM[/editline]
You all seem to be misreading what I am trying to do, I don't want to be able to switch cards on the fly
while using my PC, but instead be able to choose which of the two will start when I turn my PC on, while leaving the other one off.
Sigh
I'm still thinking about what to do. Sounds kind of impossible, but I'm sure there's a solution
[editline]03:40AM[/editline]
just underclock it to something like 400 mhz for the core and you're good
God sorry but you are acting really freaking dumb
Yo don't need to swap cards out.
It won't work.
And it's pointless because the X800 doesn't have a 2D power mode
YOU DON'T HAVE To.
Please go away you being completely unhelpful.

That's fucking fantastic, what's your point? The X800 still uses less power than a
GTX 275 even if the 275 is underclocked. And I'm not trying to swap cards out you moron.

Kids... heh
You're going to have to pull a card out to disable it, and change the monitor cable each time...
And by the way my system is running both cards together right now, But the video cable is attached to my GTX 275, I just need a way to switch off the other card using either the bios or OS software.
And no an X800 uses more power because it has no 2D MODE POWER STATE.

To switch it off you disconnect it and change the cable around.

Actually I build PCs for a living. Don't assume to know someone simply because
you yourself know so little.

Yes you sure do PC's yet you fail to get the concept of hardware
And calling me incompetent only makes you look even more stupid
Get your certificates then complain to me
Ok here's proof of power usage.
X800 (keep in mind that is total system usage)
http://techreport.com/articles.x/7742/12
Gtx 275 (gpu power only)
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-275,2266-14.html
[editline]01:52AM[/editline]
Even if both are showing full system usage the X800 still uses about 40 less watts when not
under load compared to an idle GTX 275, and since the X800 will only be used in low stress situations
it shouldn't need to speed up or increase energy consumption much.

That test is not comparable, mainly because alot has changed since 2003/4
I'm pretty sure you should be able to disable one or the other in the BIOS? It is just effort though...
Just take out the ATI and keep the GTX in there, I don't understand why you don't want to use the GTX for normal stuff (it puts itself in a low-power state purely for the reason of using it for desktop stuff anyway...)
That test is not comparable, mainly because alot has changed since 2003/4
Yes motherboards, power supplies and such, but the cards were being tested for how many
watts they pulled and that at least for those models, hasn't changed.
I know that all you want to do is disagree with
me, which is why you should just leave, your not helping me solve my problem,
your just trying to convince me there is no problem to solve.

Ya that is what I'm trying to figure out. My P6T is brand new so
I haven't fiddle around enough with the bios yet. Does anyone know how to turn a PCI-E
device off in the bios during start-up?
It's a software problem, meaning you can't have a driver installed for both Nvidia gfx and Ati gfx.
And you'll need to restart every time you remove and install new gfx driver.
So it won't work, no matter how much you believe in fairies and unicorns :colbert:

Because for one thing the card runs really hot and I have
to run the fan at 80% power to keep it cool, whereas the X800 is quite and uses less power.

I have both cards in my PC right now, I'm not trying to run both at the same time, and my video cable is
hooked to my GTX 275 right now, but the 800 XL is powered too.

It's still a software problem, you can blame on the design of windows driver integration.
It's still a software problem, you can blame on the design of windows driver integration.
So there's really no way to switch at startup? Cause that kinda of sucks. What about with a dual boot?
low power => Linux launches and the X800 XL starts up while the GTX 275 remains off
gaming => Windows launches and the GTX 275 launches while the X800 remains off
Might that work?
[editline]02:09AM[/editline]
See my goal here is not just saving power, but also making my PC quieter and the fan on my 275
is like a jet compared to my X800
