I like the modern day bits. Can't remember what ass creed it was but one had you climb a skyscraper which was pretty neat. I remember enjoying it.

That was 3.
They just need to make a game about pirates, no one's going to miss this weird templar conspiracy shit, in fact its very jarring, distracting and confusing.
Maybe its just the writing in general, though, I don't know whether or not to pin it on this modern day stuff. All I know is I laughed when Desmond died, so much for connecting with a protagonist.

The problem was you never connected with Desmond. His Ancestor's actions/deaths had much more impact for that reason, simply because you always connected with them rather than Desmond.

I totally agree. Desmond was one of the flatest characters I've ever seen. There was no "Desmond" to me. His face changed to look more like the Assassin you played in each game. He did nothing but provide a reason as to why the plot could jump between each time period. Now that spoilerspoiler, I might be interested to see how the crew connects to the animus.
I have always loved the modern days of the series, but I'm not sure how I feel about the direction the series is going with it.

To me, the modern day parts in all the AC games just felt like an annoyance, especially when things were just about to get going after gaining some momentum, then it kicked you back into the modern day world.

Owwww that hurt. Of course I might be late for not having played AC3 yet but there was no need for this. Welp, whatever, didn't like him too.
I thought them killing Desmond off was the dumbest thing ever. He was finally getting interesting because he actually got to do assassin stuff and then they just killed him off.
The modern-day story will be important for long-time fans of the series--especially if you're curious about Desmond's fate after Assassin's Creed 3.
Maybe he's not dead after all
