Yessss, dead mods won't be dead anymore!
I would love some updates, especially to hammer.
Hammer needs some serious updating.
but i've gotten used to the somewhat outdated mapping system that is hammer :(
Is it just me or has Valve realised how incredibly well they're doing and making shit free for the communities sake.
Is it just me or has Valve realised how incredibly well they're doing and making shit free for the communities sake.
They're realizing that they are doing incredible well and see the potential to do it even better by making shit free.
Which is better, the UDK or Source SDK? (useful for source, artistic for UDK).
UDK is seriously more complex in my opinion.
I'd say UDK beats the Source SDK in every way. It will always be more up to date and have far more support for features, especially the visually pleasing ones. Haven't used UDK however since I've only tried the SDK a bit. So maybe the Source SDK is more beginner friendly? I dunno, if it is then it could probably be a good place to start off at and move on to UDK when you want to make games and not just mods and learning how to import and export models in games and focus on learning the basics of map making and such.
This sdk will only allow you to map and possibly mod existing games. UDK is for more or less standalone games really.

what do you peeps mean when you say "update hammer?" How could hammer be updated? would it somehow change the way we create brushes and apply textures to them for use in Source games?
what do you peeps mean when you say "update hammer?" How could hammer be updated? would it somehow change the way we create brushes and apply textures to them for use in Source games?
It's mainly that Hammer's interface is still stuck in the year 2004.
It's mainly that Hammer's interface is still stuck in the year 2004.
i think you mean 1997
i think you mean 1997
I think you mean 1996, for Quake maps, the original Worldcraft.
they should update hammer, but also release a separate "hammer classic" for those customers whose time machines have broken
Valve has multiple versions of hammer; I'm sure they are keeping the best version out of our hands.
Valve has multiple versions of hammer; I'm sure they are keeping the best version out of our hands.
the version where carve works
the version where carve works
iirc not even Valve uses carve
inb4 That video where the guy uses carve to make a bumpy terrain.
The day valve uses carve is the day their HQ is struck by a world destroying meteor.
That's a Gabe-is-fat joke in the making.
wow, free to play mods for people without games on their acc

My hard drive is ready ...for full-bright maps made by little kids.
The sad thing is the community for UDK is pretty much dead, every multiplayer mod I've downloaded for it only has a few servers and a few players.
"Standalone game creation tool" "Dead" And the Source SDK is not user friendly, and has a horrible art creation pipeline which requires 3rd party tools in order to work.
It was released with a multiplayer game you know, Unreal Tournament 3, there was a community for it and it was alive, than it dropped off the face of the earth.
UDK != UT3.
I thought it was a joke at first due to the Source SDK already being free.
It was released with a multiplayer game you know, Unreal Tournament 3, there was a community for it and it was alive, than it dropped off the face of the earth. At least one part of the source SDK (hammer) is user friendly, if an idiot like me can pick it up and figure out how to use it almost entirely on my own I'm pretty sure that counts as user friendly.
Uh... Unreal Tournament 3 was made with UDK, it isn't UDK.
Uh... Unreal Tournament 3 was made with UDK, it isn't UDK.
Unreal Engine 3. UDK is the free SDK.
