Yahoo owns a lot of very popular internet sites as well as AOL, who also own a lot of popular internet sites. Tumblr and Gizmodo come to mind. Not sure why they'd want these or if that's why, but Yahoo is more than just a crummy search engine.
Reminder that not only is Yahoo more than just a shitty search engine (as others have pointed out), but Verizon is a LOT more than just Verizon Wireless. Verizon services millions for Fios, DSL, home phone, etc. Particularly their Fios/DSL could benefit from this deal, along with Yahoo's ad revenue now being piled in to Verizon's gross.
