Because competitive games are high emotion activities, same as sports. And because there's no consequences for talking shit(generally).
Also because nobody really gives a shit, apart from drama queens who cry about every little thing.

Sports are arguably more awful because of the potential for violence.
"online bullying"
nigga, screen, look away, etc.
there are popular big youtubers that go to psychiatrists for this kind of shit. like shitty youtube comments actually affect them and their day-to-day processes. maybe this is what everyone needs if theyre so concerned over getting bullied on the internet.
The word “n00b” is slung around as ‘banter’, but perhaps it’s just a gateway to stronger levels of abuse.
am i wrong in thinking that anything competitive, be it online or otherwise has the same problem of people slinging abuse
i mean football isn't exactly known as the sport of gentlemen
the only real hatred and abuse i've seen are in mobas and competitive games where people are fixated on doing the same thing again and again
regular gamers and gamers who just play singleplayer games are pretty chill (most of the time)
cause it's fun to be an asshole
n00b, the gateway drug of online abuse. You heard it here folks.
im sure people are pissy to eachother because people tend to get angry when they get killed in a game
especially if its kind of humiliating in a subjective sense (killcam, whOOSh sound, domination etc)
Every time someone calls me a n00b I cut myself, I can't handle that kind of horrible abuse.
Honestly in my experience, the more violent, abusive gamers are a vocal minority in a handful of genres, usually competitive ones like fighters, MOBAs and FPSs, so to generalize so broadly in saying and implying that gamers as a whole are awful to each other is just plain incorrect and honestly slightly offensive to the rest of us that aren't total dicks.
Shit talking the opposing team can be beneficial in shattering their spirit, same goes for positive reinforcement for your team, never shit talk your garbage teamates no matter how noob the thing they do is. Also I'm not talking CoD tourny level shit talking, that's just pathetic and annoying hahahah
its all true, gaming has made me into a horrible racist
i fucking hate brazilians sometimes
Because it's fun :v:

It may just be me but some kid on voice chat calling you "faggot" isn't quite the same as a few thousand people emailing you each day telling you that you're a worthless piece of shit and that you should kill yourself.
Because DarkRP.

I guess this means I abuse myself all the time. It feels good to have sort of confirmation!

Fucking Russians.
MMOs have made me wildly racist, but only in a video game context. And taught me that Brazilians are insanely nationalistic for some reason.
Besides, most games now have options to mute voicechat now, and some even let you turn off text chat all together.
I remember how much fun it was to say something like "Muted~" back in TF2s' early days to angry children yelling for whatever reason. The very notion that someone isn't bothering to listen to their tirades usually made them go more ballistic, which is why I actually rarely muted people. :v:
only pvp game i play is battlefield, and you can hide the chat there, so i do. other than that i exclusively play co-op or offline games because im so exhausted of seeing insults everywhere. i genuinely dont understand why people have to be so mean to each other. if youre both playing the same game, you clearly have the same hobby and interests. thats a perfect way to try making friends.
but no, he killed you, so you have to call him a faggot, insult his mother, or make a rape joke. fuck anyone that does that.

Exactly, this also happens in "traditional" sports and general competitions.
Rough banter and shit-talking is to be expected, especially when people get emotional about winning/losing.
Venting their emotions, etc.
like if i went to a chess club, i wouldnt call the person who beats me a faggot. id try to learn how hes better than me. but if i play dota, im 100% guaranteed to see something racist in chat before the 20 minute mark.

I suppose that's the same difference between Chess and football. While it may be mentally challenging, Chess isn't exactly a kind of game where emotions run high (although I'm sure there are exceptions).

i used chess bc it was the first example i thought of. there is literally 0 reason to call someone a faggot or wish death upon them in any game, ever. period.

There's a difference between saying and meaning.
Most of the shit people say online is just hot air and being salty.
Playing some Blade and Soul and people get really aggressive and pissed of when you kill them in open world PvP areas. (Where the point is to kill others.)
Never seen any real abuse over some online game chat (what I would call real abuse) to be honest and if you really get affected by somebody calling you a "n00b" then I dont know what to tell you, disable chat maybe.
I went to a Monster Hunter event last weekend, literally everyone there was an awesome, fun and cool person. Stuff like that has happened before, I've never met a single gamer that wasn't just great at a face to face event. In CSGO and Dota tournaments the big teams are always really sportsmanly and courteous to each other and iirc there was one time they weren't and if was a big deal. There was one time where I saw what looked like a barfight style argument over competitive CoD but even then everyone was just like wtf this isn't normal stop it. Ihink it's safe to say it's an entirely online phenomenon.
I called someone a n00b in enemy territory back in 2004, now I regularly win online games not by playing the game, but by shattering the other team's will to live and having them leave to go overdose on Flintstones vitamins
you, my good sir are a monster,.
