The one she has looked at is the HP Pavilion dv6t, and I want to know if it is a good choice? If it isn't, examples?
The highest possible price is about $1100
Stay away from HP laptops, Almost all of them have heat issues and what does she use her laptop for?
get her a mac book pro. moms love dat shit
Also heres an ASUS $619 and they make very nice laptops and other parts, also ASUS has great customer service too.

That would be dumb to waste her money on a macbook when more than likely all she will do is web browse.
What's she using it for? A little netbook may be even more useful than a laptop, if she's only going to browse the web on it, though I don't really know anything about the laptop market, especially in America, where it's all cheaper.
Also, shameless Asus Transformer plug, for if she only wants to browse the net.
if all she does is web browse, then get her a fucking netbook.
Don't get her a netbook, older people usually have a hard time using smaller screens. Just get her a cheap 15 or 17 inch laptop if she just wants to web browse.

I don't get why people are suggesting anything that has a GT540 in it.
I'd get her something with an E350 APU in it. I really don't see what she would need more power for. They do 1080p perfectly, and are pretty quick in general.

I was only giving him that $600 laptop because of the HP he linked, for only $19 more for a better performance laptop I don't see why not.
She mostly uses her computer to browse the internet, check her mail and write stuff like PowerPoint presentations.
It's quite unusual, but she somtimes wants to play games too, although mostly those casual games, but I can see her getting into Civ V if she'd just try it.
She also stores a lot of pictures on her laptop, so a large HDD would be good.
Also, she wants a big screen because she has quite bad eyesight
[editline]29th November 2011[/editline]
So no netbooks.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230139 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230132 Will be great compared to that HP you linked in OP, they will both run games quite well and are more than enough for what she needs, One is a 17.3 inch other is 15.6 both will do great but if you want the same specs as the 15.6 but a bigger screen here is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230191
I honestly wouldn't buy the $800 one for my mom though since it will be money wasted but feel free to do as you wish.

Also if 500gb isnt enough you can always get her this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149191 or something about that size and take some velcro and velcro it to her laptop, thats what my friends did when they were still using torrents at school.
Nvidia Graphics? What the fuck?
Civ 5 and other casual games should run fine on Intel HD graphics...

He can always get cheaper but I really wouldn't causea 540m is pretty friggin powerful and it wont be complete crap compared to intel graphics in about 4 years.
She chose not to get the HP, and she'll take a look at some ASUS tomorrow.

Thats great, Again you don't have to get a real expensive one and intel graphics will be just fine. Again only reason why I said don't get the HP is cause almost all of them have bad heat issues.

Intel GMAs suck nuts
the 4500m in my current laptop barely runs HL2DM on low
get a 540m.
[editline]30th November 2011[/editline]
and HL2DM is less demanding than civ 5

For what is mom will be doing it wont matter too much, but if she were to play source games then yea a 540m would be the better choice. Just trying to save this guy from spending too much money on his mom.
Never, ever go with an Intel GMA. Just don't do it. Leave yourself a bit of headroom if you ever decide to run more intensive software.

By casual games I think of low graphics puzzle games and hoyle card games, and maybe minecraft. Games that dont need a 540m but decent intel graphics.

I'm amazed Aero runs on intel graphics.
The Intel HD3000 is actually fairly powerful, if you can get one. It's on-die with sandy bridge if you can get it at the price range.

I'm not paying for anything, she's buying the laptop with her own money
Chromebook?
Chromebook?
Nope, she wants windows and she does other things than surf the web as you will see if you read the thread
[editline]2nd December 2011[/editline]
Also she has now ordered an ASUS K53SV or something pretty much exactly like that. Is it a good choice?
I did read the thread. Install Ubuntu or something on the Chromebook.. no need to be so closed.
