I'm a bit confused. Is BBC his blog? Because this feels like a blog post, not news article.

To be honest, if the requester was a commenter, it kind of makes sense to me. Not that situation specifically, but I can see a lot of battle ground on forums that disallow edition/deletion of posts after a certain amount of time (and in which mods/admins won't take responsibility of). That, plus quotes by other users.
I really hope that the Streisand effect kicks in on this one.
Maybe google has purposely gimped it so people complain to have it removed or made more lenient.
