Poor computer performance, didn't used to be like this.

Since about say, 2 months ago my computer has been doing poorly. it isn't really the greatest rig but a lot of the games I used to play that didn't lag a bit lag pretty badly now. I have defragged my HDD with Diskeeper 3 times, cleaned out the inside of my comp from dust and am getting a graphics card sometime soon. I haven't checked for viruses in some time now and am doing so now but I doubt that a virus is the cause of the problem. I could really use some help on this since I don't want to have to reinstall my OS. Will provide you with specs if you need them, even though that really isn't a factor.

If [b]nothing[/b] works, then you can always just backup, reformat and reinstall, but there's probably a simpler solution. Reformat if you can't find anything that works.

Alright, while I was running the scan a virus started up and woulden't let me do anything so I restarted in safemode and am running a virus scan with Windows Defender and Trend Micro, anything else I should download to make sure I get a full scan and eliminate this virus. Hopefully once it is gone my comp will be back to normal.

In these past 2 months, did you switch from Windows XP to Vista? Because Vista lags me alot, Windows 7 works as fast as XP.

try CCleaner, it cleans out all your temporary internet files and a lot of other junk, it also has a registry scanner which deletes broken registry files and such. also get game booster, it closes processes that you don't need to run a game, I use it and see a great boost in performance and my games don't lag, when your done playing you just click "back to normal mode" and it starts all those processes again.
