Basically they realized the lore is a flaming trainwreck and put this out to try and unfuck it.

I really don't see much wrong with the lore. Only that there's TONS of it. This would be a good way to get a condensed version.
Also, dat artwork.

As far as I can recall, there are just a ton of contradictions with older versions of the lore making the entire thing a clusterfuck.

That and retcons
That and retcons
Hmm, will be curious to see how Blizzard addresses this then.
Basically they realized the lore is a flaming trainwreck and put this out to try and unfuck it.
Nah the lore is fine this is just them releasing a lore book because they know people are interested in that stuff.
[editline]21st February 2016[/editline]
There aren't that many retcons and contradictions either. The only people I really see criticizing the lore of the game are disaffected WoW players or Warcraft 3 players who just disagree with the places Blizzard took the story for their MMO.
Basically they realized the lore is a flaming trainwreck and put this out to try and unfuck it.
Anybody that has been following it even remotely knows that it's not a clusterfuck.
Are they going to retcon the "There is only one legion" thing?
i think they did already
There's a surprisingly small amount of contradictions but quite a few cases of characters doing full 180's or doing fuck all. granted I haven't kept up with it at all in the last like, 5 years so who knows
Anybody that has been following it even remotely knows that it's not a clusterfuck.
Yes, it is. I played WoW a couple months ago and for fuck's sake, it was like every single different area took place in a different time period.
When the Warchief of the Horde changes based on what area I'm in, it's a clusterfuck.

You have to have been following for a longer time to see that its a clusterfuck.

This is the nature of an MMO. Updating quest and cutscene dialogue for leveling zones just isn't a huge priority. When you are playing through the game it's really easy to tell what is happening.

That's just how mmo's are. Doesn't mean the lore is fucked up, it's just the game.
I've been following the lore for a long time and I can't really call it a cluster fuck. However it is true that it's gone pretty weird, especially with some characters.
the lore is fucked up tho
we dont know most of the demons origins(excluding terrorguards, eredar, wrathguards)
we dont know how argus looks like
we dont know how fel works in detail
we dont know how arcane works in detail
we dont know how necromancy works
we dont know how death knights work
we dont know how languages work
we dont know about the titans other than they travel around space and colonize planets with creatures
we dont know a lot abour draenor
various things contradict, i.e. how archimonde returns in wod despite dying in warcraft 3
theres a ton of contradictions, plot holes and more that are hopefully filled with this book
I wish they would reprint their older books. I've been having trouble finding them.
by now ur better off using the internet

Didn't they address the whole "Archimonde is dead" thing with the fact that the demons of the burning legion are bound to the twisting nether and merely return there for a time after they've been slain?
Isn't that a Ragnaros scenario where we just have to fuck them up on their home turf? I do agree as far as how fel works, arcane works, necromancy, etc etc.
If I had to pick something I hated about the lore, I hate how Thrall has gone from one of the most badass people on the planet, who saved the world MULTIPLE times, to a glorified fucking quest giver.
i didn't like the entire hellscream arc with him being warchief, its very silly. The massive number of quests that still mention that he's a warchief is astounding, as well, but I don't entirely blame them for that; I like that Thrall has a family now but they realllly downplayed him very fast. Kinda sad how quickly he became irrelevant, and is still rather irrelevant in WoD, when I wanted to see more interaction between him and Durotan

This, this entire fucking post.
I imagined someone like Garrosh doing some great things with the horde since he had Thrall as an example and great advisors ready and willing to aid him. Within ONE expansion he had every leader in the alliance and horde discussing how they were going to end him.
That being said, his scene with Thrall at the end of the last questline in Warlords gave me a brand new respect for the Hellscream name. And garrosh's VA.

Plot holes are logical inconsistencies in a story, not things being unexplained. For what its worth, a lot of these things have been explained by various sources, some of which might be hard to find. As an example, one of the writers once answered a tweet specifically about how fel and arcane magics work and what their origins are.
Regarding your one contradiction, that is alternate universe Archimonde. In the story, Kil'Jaedans plan to corrupt the orcs using the fel blood of mannoroth failed, so archimonde took charge with a more direct strategy.
I wanna get the canon and the lore, but it'd be like taking another history class :v:
To the posts above: They reduced the Green Jesus stuff because that was easily the top lore complaint about Cataclysm, that everyone, horde and alliance players just followed Thrall around why he did stuff. The final cutscene of the expansion is Thrall killing the raid boss who's chin you have been DPSing for 10 minutes. People were just sick of it.
Regarding Garrosh as Warchief, what was silly about it? You don't seem to post a reason. I thought he had a pretty good arc. I love the fact that he discovered an Old One and instead of falling victim to madness actually reversed things and used it as a weapon. His force of will was that strong.

I concede your point, it takes one hell of a crazy bastard to be able to command the power of an old God without going completely mad (garrosh was to an extent) but let's stop here for a moment shall we? Garrosh brought a PIECE of an Old God to Orgrimmar, and what do we know about Old Gods? They never just, stop, even in death.
Makes me wonder if Org has been corrupted. But if it has we won't know for quite awhile.
Makes me wonder if Org has been corrupted. But if it has we won't know for quite awhile.
Entire Horde becomes corrupted and indisputably the bad guys. Finally a reason for Alliance and Horde to be at war that actually makes sense.
wow lore sucks tbh. Warcraft III will always be the true canon for me and most everything that comes after is best ignored. They just butcher the original characters and story to pander to a dumber younger audience. At least this might have some nice art.

Iunno, they've really weakened the Horde and made the Alliance out to be the bad guys, with the alliance attacking the peaceful tauren and whatnot who disputed the war in the first place.

The garrosh arc just seemed forced. He really did become evil and quickly too, ergo the battle for orgrimmar and whatnot, had both alliance and horde leaders want his head. It made no sense for him to become the new warchief. Thrall has had very little (actual) story development since Warcraft, and I liked how much Thrall wanted to forge an (lol) alliance with the two factions

That was Thrall's greatest strength as a leader. He was more of a grand diplomat than a 5 star general. Wasn't Garrosh's first act as Warchief to declare war on Jaina and Theramore?
