I don't get why they filter out all the pirated content, and put up all the legal files up again for download.

there has to be a huge amount of pirated content on megaupload in various formats, from .rars, .exes, .mp3s, etc.
attempting to just "filter" out the content that wasn't passively filtered in the first place would be highly time-extensive and require a lot of human resources.
As soon as the news broke about MU being shut down, my first thought was about what'll happen to all those people who were legitimately storing their own data and paying for the service. If the government goes ahead and destroys all the data before anyone can get to it, that'll be a low blow to tons of innocent people who will lose money and data. It's almost as if they're being treated as criminals, too.

I thought it was impossible to filter out all the pirated content - isn't that why the site got shut down?

Yeah think of those 15 people that accidentally used a warez site to host their priceless family photos
Didn't the site actually get shut down because they were going to make a music service that only paid money to the artist?
it's just easier to arrest someone
Didn't the site actually get shut down because they were going to make a music service that only paid money to the artist?
Too far fetched.
Didn't the site actually get shut down because they were going to make a music service that only paid money to the artist?
That's the suspected reason. It hasn't been confirmed, however.
[editline]31st January 2012[/editline]
Also, the "MegaKey" thing they were trying to implement with the new music site supposedly replaced all ads on the internet with MegaUpload ads via a browser extension, making them all the ad revenue of your surfing no matter what sites you happen to visit. It was pretty sneaky from what I heard about it.
I thought it was impossible to filter out all the pirated content - isn't that why the site got shut down?
That's the problem with the precedent of the case; it's basically saying that if you're a public file sharing site, it's futile to have anti-piracy strategies in place for people who do choose to upload pirated content (because they're going to do it anyway) making it impossible to run within the restraint of the law
No the reason it got shut down was because Megaupload paid people who uploaded copyright infringed content to get more hits, and didn't remove the files as effectively as they should when a takedown request was received.
And that whole part about Megaupload launching it's own music service as the reason for the takedown is bullshit. FBI cases are prepared months, and for something of this magnitude, years in advance.
Yeah think of those 15 people that accidentally used a warez site to host their priceless family photos
Over 15 people on the team at the college I go to used sites such as MegaUpload for transfering files that our mailing system didn't allow, or files that were too large (PDF for example)
The files are kept private and are shared only by sharing the link, there's nothing illegal about storing files you've legally gained access to as long as you sharing the file doesn't cost others valurable business, as which it wouldn't as none of the files are public.
Allow me to demonstrate by uploading Garry's Mod (as an example) to any filesharing site of your choice, and see how it gets 0 downloads without me illegaly sharing the link/file with others.
Didn't the site actually get shut down because they were going to make a music service that only paid money to the artist?
no, that's a conspiracy theory at best
Of course the US government acted without warning. If they gave warning DotCom would've ran off like he did last time :v:
The thing I find funny is the way that a lot of these people talk about piracy:

Actually warrants were all there, paperwork was airtight and it was about embezzlement charges and the fact Megaupload was actively paying people to pirate content. Sooooo....
Now I can get my family footage.
I hope I can get all of it...
Didn't the site actually get shut down because they were going to make a music service that only paid money to the artist?
it was found that this service actually changed all ads that you see, i.e. the project wonderful ads on mspaintadventures.com, to megaupload and other mega____ ads.
it was secret adware.
oh and no, megaupload boss and co. got pinned, as it turned out, for doing a whole lot more illegal shit which funded megaupload in the first place. piracy was just one of those bullshit things they tacked on to the crimes.

They should only have allowed users to post warez if they had some kind of "gold" status, hidden in an area not accessible to people who do not have said "gold" status
They should only have allowed users to post warez if they had some kind of "gold" status, hidden in an area not accessible to people who do not have said "gold" status
They shouldn't even had allowed illegal material onto their service in the first place, though it's impossible to keep away without manually checking every single file uploaded.
Edit:
Holy fuck I'm slow I first get it now.
garry you ironic moneygrabber.
That made my night Zeke.
Why don't they simply put it back up? It is easier done then said.

I see what you're getting at, it'd make sense if their "gold" section let people "talk" about "warez" and they didn't actually host any "files" themselves.

There is a massive fucking difference between seizing a server as evidence in a trial, with appropriate warrants, based on a case that has likely been built up for months. And downloading a movie you didn't buy because "lol free stuff".
Why don't they simply put it back up? It is easier done then said.
well you just said it and i guess you made less effort saying that than they have to put in doing what you want them to do

In before garry gets extradited to the US, since a precedent has already been set.
I see what you're getting at, it'd make sense if their "gold" section let people "talk" about "warez" and they didn't actually host any "files" themselves.
Definitely, but we've seen how the law goes after sites that have links to content just as harshly as it goes after sites that host it.

Dude what the fuck is wrong with you, why do you have to be such an asshole on every Megaupload thread?
