Keep the message conversation open so that when you unlock it's already open?
Elsewise if you view the message within a few moments of it being received. you get a "slide to reply" in place of the "slide to unlock".
Which immediately opens the conversation view for that chat.

I meant message history.
I don't believe that there's any other way of viewing the history without something like a jailbreak app or maybe backup explorer.

There is a way to view your entire SMS history, although it's a "messy" method. The iPhone stores text messages in a SQL database that is backed up to your computer when you sync your phone. It's located in %appdata%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\. The filename is "84034ac7481f40ed220807ec76f705551c237221". If you can locate this file, you can upload it to sites such as [url=http://www.iphone-sms.com/]www.iphone-sms.com[/url] which will convert the file to a somewhat readable history of your text messages.
