"Fences" without Impulse?

Okay so I wanted to install fences.

Here's pretty much what it does:

It's free (unless you want to get a pro version but I'm okay with just free version), and I really wanted to use it to replace my icons on my desktop with.

Problem is, recently they made fences require their Impulse client. Is there a way to get Fences without having to install impulse?

Also, are there any desktop apps/gadgets for Windows 7/Vista that act has a "memo" pad or something?

I used to use this thing back when I was running blackbox on XP called BBmemo that was great and very helpful for taking misc notes on stuff. I'm not talking stuff like the sticky notes, I mean a full fledged note-pad auto-hiding "widget" of sorts.

Impulse is fine, you can even get their games with it, just download it, it's not that heavy either.

Why would they even charge for that?

They don't charge for it AFAIK, and the previous beta versions they had didn't require impulse

Doesn't that force fences to uninstall if you uninstall Impulse?

I mean the pro version, just seems like the biggest waste of money ever.
