Too bad Natural Selection is a dead game and Natural Selection 2 is slowly getting there. I started playing NS2 again a couple months ago and it still doesn't have the same charm and feel as the original NS. Doesn't help that the game isn't very new-player friendly nor are some of it's players and servers friendly (some are set to auto-kick rookies).
Natural Selection was the first game I actually got to release my own map AND play said map with other people :(
Albeit it wasn't a great map and pretty one-sided, but it was still loads of fun.

I even re-installed NS not too long ago just to run around some of the levels...

Natural Selection was seriously a gift to us all and now it's just dead :(
NS2 was a lot of fun when you had a very well balanced match, somebody who willingly played commander, and a good amount of communication.
But that all happened a little too rarely for my taste, and went combined with the loading time issues they had, joining friend issues they still have, and just wasting 20 minutes on stomping over a enemy team who has no commander.

Was some of the best time I've ever had was Marks-Servers (custom maps). Almost always full, full of Canadian, US and European players who were fun people, even got into my first clan there. NS and it's community are truly a gift that will never be replaced.
I always thought Natural Selection 2 had interesting gameplay, but it kind of needed something else to give a sense of progression between matches. Love or hate XP systems and unlocks in fps games, but at least it breathes a bit of fresh air into things.
Something like that would've helped imo.
