I've revised my budgets and have found that I can spend up to $80 each month on a phone. I currently have a Huawei piece of shit on pre-paid but it's an old phone and 3G only works half of the time. I thought I'd get an iPhone because a) I have had a very positive experience with an iPod Touch and this iPad and b) I have brought several apps on this iPad that I won't have to re-buy if I get an iPhone.
Would it be better to get the newer 5 or an older 4s? The 4s is obviously cheaper and is still supported by Apple, but I don't know how long Apple will support it for; if I get one on a two-year contract I don't want to have it become obsolete at the end of those two years like what happened to my iPod Touch. Any thoughts?
4s. I've used both -- friend has a 5 and I have a 4s, and in my experience, 4s is just as good as the 5. Same chip, both are supported, and the only thing you'd be missing is a slightly larger screen.

So if it has the same chip, then I guess in theory that when Apple moves to not support that chip, both the 4s and 5 would go at the same time?
Thanks and yeah I don't think the larger screen will make up for the price difference.
Are you in a 4G area? As far as I know only the 5 has a 4G radio. The 4S can use some 3G bands that are quick enough to qualify as 4G (barely) but they aren't actually 4G technology.

Never mind, I'm talking about America, you're in Australia.
My 4S still runs fine, and most importantly it still has iOS 6. I prefer the aspect ratio of this display to the iPhone 5 as well.
it's so weird how everybody has the same brands of phone

There's like three major phone types and Blackberries are trash, it's no surprise so many people would own the same kind of phone

It's almost as if popular phone brands are owned by a lot of people!
okay wow I didn't mean to be dumb, I just meant that the fact that essentially all competition can be removed by two major brands is surprising. I guess that's what happens when a revolutionary product is released.
look at a 5c?

Ya the suprise is that people choosed the overpriced/locked one :v:
I used to work at a verizon store and seeing how many problems people have when they updated to the latest version of ios makes me say not to go for it.

Yeah, imagine the kind of moronic people who want high quality hardware and don't mind it the way it comes stock. It's almost as if the phone doesn't need modding to become usable *cough cough touchwiz cough*

If you think that the hardware in the iPhone is more powerful than any other high-end phones on the market that's your issue. Personally, I dislike Apple because of their politics regarding developers... you can tell a lot about a corporation that charges devs to compile an app on their platform. Just get a cheap regular phone and be done with it.
To be honest I've used the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5 (not me personally but my friends have had both) and I like the 5 a lot more. The screen size is a lot nicer and it feels pretty speedy imo
The 4s is probably getting its last update this year with iOS8 so a 5 would probably be a better option.
I loved my 5 and would totally recommend it. Such a nice design and feels good to hold.
Coming from a 4s to a 5, I can say that the extra screen space is really nice for web browsing. Other than that, there's not much to get excited about. If you at all worried about durability though, the anodizing on the 5 is pretty crappy. My 5 started to look rough pretty quick, and it stays in a case.
look at a 5c?
Basically an iPhone 5 in a plastic enclosure. Unless you can get it cheaper, there's really no reason to go with it.
Apple will probably stop supporting the 4S next year, judging by their past behaviour, and the 5 will probably be supported for the next two years at least.

This information is actually incorrect - the iPhone 5 has a faster, A6 chip, as compared to the iPhone 4s's slower, more outdated A5 chip.
The next iOS update, iOS 8, is likely to be the last update for the aging iPhone 4s. The performance of the 4s on iOS 7 is pretty lackluster. iOS 8 will likely make it go even slower, so I'd say just get a 5.
May I suggest Xperia Z2 instead?
Its water resistant, dust resistant, fire and dark resistant
Blazing fast 2.3 quad core.
Its Sony so you can get it to function with the other product such as ps3 controller, mirroring it to a tv, ect.
Not to mention how cool it looks

when someone explicitly states "I've got apps from iPad"
you don't recommend an android phone
Definitely get the 5, the 4s is practically dead. The performance on iOS 7 is terrible, i doubt 8 will be better and it's also going to be the last update it gets. The iPhone 5 is still a pretty solid phone.
None.
Get a 5.
Apple iPhones and iPod Touches only really tend to last about 3 generations before they stop receiving updates/become increasingly slow.
If you're worried about the extra costs, you would probably be able to recuperate those if you sell the 5 when you upgrade in the future.
Don't cheap out on technology, it will cost you in the long run.
the 5C is dirt cheap on a contract
Don't forget that the 5 is also lighter and thinner
Okay my mind has been partly changed. We do have 4G networks in Australia and they cover my area, so the 5S and 5C have an advantage over the 4S there. And yeah if I'm getting a phone on a 24 month contract I want it to be supported over those 24 months.
What about the difference between the 5S and 5C though? The 5S has the A7 chip, but between it and the 5C is it worth the additional costs?

Bah, don't bother with the 5C, the 5 is better if you want the cheaper option.
The 5S is a fair bit more powerful with the fingerprint scanner. If you're going on a 2 year contract and plan to stick with it then it's probably best getting the 5S. I'm just not a massive fan of the 5C's design.
Definitely get the 5S if you can, though the iPhone 6 won't take that long to get here.
