Intel will mass produce "3D" transistors for all future CPUs

From engadget:
Looks like 3D isn't just a fad, folks, so long as we're talking about silicon -- Intel just announced that it has invented a 3D "Tri-Gate" transistor that will allow the company to keep shrinking chips, Moore's Law naysayers be darned. Intel says the transistors will use 50 percent less power, conduct more current and provide 37 percent more speed than their 2D counterparts thanks to vertical fins of silicon substrate that stick up through the other layers, and that those fancy fins could make for cheaper chips too -- currently, though, the tri-gate tech adds an estimated 2 to 3 percent cost to existing silicon wafers. Intel says we'll see the new technology first in its 22nm Ivy Bridge CPUs, going into mass production in the second half of the year, and it's planning 14nm chips in 2013 and 10nm chips in 2015. Also, 3D transistors won't be limited to the cutting edge -- Intel reps told journalists that they "will extend across the entire range of our product line," including mobile devices. Three videos and a press release await you after the break.
And now a really lame video explaining how they work (what happens when companies like intel want to be like google):

And the best tech Demo EVER!

TL;DR:
Intel is now producing super fast transistors that are about 33% faster and save 50% more energy, thus keeping up with the moore's law. take that Nvidia!
I'm mass producing jizz due to this.
I read this on Wednesday
Amazing tech demo... it really demonstrates the usefulness of the technology.
Transistors have never been 2D.

Dat bad acting.

Amazing tech demo
It didn't demonstrate anything
Where's the benchmarks?
fuck i just bought an i7 2600k god damn it intel
I sincerely doubt that Ivy Bridge will be released before next year. However, that could change depending on how well Bulldozer performs.
So what's this mean? Way faster processors?
Well that is quite the leap from one technology to another, now it will almost impossible for any new company to produce processors that can compete on such a level. This can also mean there is a higher percentage of fabrication defects. Though it is still nice that we are moving forward, AMD Bulldozer now just looks like a play toy to such a fabrication technique.
Has Intel Patented it yet?
What does this mean for AMD?

Even if it wasn't patented which it probably is patented Intel can claim Prior art.
As for the 22nm processor if Intel releases it this year before Skyrim I know what I'm doing :D
"Now what we have here is a desktop"
He's saying it as if nobody knows what they are :colbert:
That tech demo is worth shit. Where's my benchmarks?
That tech demo is worth shit. Where's my benchmarks?
It would not have been as shit if they were showing off the integrated GPU but they never said anything about one and just said its a computer and it does what computers do.
Less power consumption? So that means less heat produced. That's got to be good for increasing performance.
TBH an i5 2500K is already far higher than any game can use (it all rests on the gpu). Anybody with an i7 is either rendering or silly. We wont be seeing any performance increases except in mobile devices and genuine cpu hogs (rendering and servers) simply because we don't use most of our cpus.
Isn't the Ivy Bridge suppose to come out sometime this year?
Does it mean it will have the same technology mentioned here?
I thought Ivy Bridge was just the socket 1155 low power CPUs?
[editline]7th May 2011[/editline]
OP says this is Ivy Bridge and will contain the 3D transistor stuff.
fuck i just bought an i7 2600k god damn it intel
Consolation prize: You motherboard is still good since Ivy Bridge is still Socket 1155.

No, iirc Ivy Bridge is socket 2011.
Intel's been on a damn rampage lately.
I seriously hate that they call it "3D".
They're trying to leech off of the 3D movies fad. It's like those damn HD vision glasses.
[editline]sasd[/editline]
Nobody else sees this?

no not really
what are they supposed to call it? they just went from everything being on a plane to being stacked somewhat, 3D works fine.
Before it was flat - 2D - You can see only 2 sides or such.
Now it is with top, left, right n so on sides - 3D - You could see 3 sides at one time.
Technically you can't see anything. :colbert:
what the fuck is a transistor and why is it such a big deal that this one isn't flat

that video was shit and didn't help

I don't see a problem
If it was some super leet Alienware crap, then I would.
