Say cheese! The Hubble Space Telescope captured this friendly image of the galaxy cluster SDSS J1038+4849 in the constellation Ursa Major. The eyes of this galactic happy face are two distant, bright galaxies, according to an ESA release, and lines that make up the face and smile are actually arcs created by an effect called strong gravitational lensing. Galaxy clusters are some of the universe’s most massive structures, capable of exerting a gravitational pull so strong, it warps the spacetime around them. By redirecting light rays, a galaxy cluster in the foreground acts as a cosmic lens that can magnify, distort, and bend the light that’s behind them. In this particular case, the bending of light from some faraway source produced a ring-like structure called an Einstein Ring: the result of an exact, symmetrical alignment of the light source, the lens, and the observer.
http://www.iflscience.com/space/smiley-face-galaxy-cluster-spotted-hubble It's so neat to see what happens when gravity distorts light in interesting ways.

That's some serious lensing
I know it's said at least once per space thread But space is wicked awesome.

it's like an intergalatic shitpost
space is cool.
space is cool.
A brisk 2.7 Kelvin.
it's like an intergalatic shitpost
I knew a facepuncher would beat North Korea to space.
A brisk 2.7 Kelvin.
Only 2.7 degrees warmer than the heart of your most recent ex.
Gravity lensing is such an incredible concept. It's so strange.
I like to imagine it's another species trying to convey friendliness.
I like to imagine it's another species trying to convey friendliness.
Or smugness. Those fuckers can manipulate shit in space way better than we can, and they're rubbing it in our faces. Get the nukes.
Or smugness. Those fuckers can manipulate shit in space way better than we can, and they're rubbing it in our faces. Get the nukes.
I don't think nukes would help you very much against something capable of warping space like that.
Gravity lensing is such an incredible concept. It's so strange.
What's even better is we have gravity lensing going on around us. Anything with a mass, no matter how small in comparison to other larger objects, still bends light around it. Space (and by extension, the universe) is truly fascinating.
It even got a nose
Quickly, draw a giant penis! Let's show those aliens that we are an advanced species too!

That is a fucking evil space god with it's eyes set on us. It just looks like that because we cannot comprehend it's physical form.
A brisk 2.7 Kelvin.
that got me thinking, where does that, uh, "heat" come from? is it all the radiation swinging around?
Seriously looks a lot like the wormhole from Interstellar. I want to believe, but I don't and I don't need to. Space will always blow my mind.
