So i got a guitar for christmas and i'm trying to learn hot to play it (decently) I've been practicing for like a week and now i can play Yankee Doodle and Ode to Joy at decent tempos. I practically don't feel pain in my fingers when i play anymore. So yeah, any good tips? [editline]16th January 2012[/editline] Oh forgot to mention that the guitar is acoustic
First of all, what do you want to play? Jazz, rock, metal, blues?
First of all, what do you want to play? Jazz, rock, metal, blues?
Rock/Metal
Gonna be hard with an acoustic guitar
Just learn a load of chords, get used to playing them and switching, find a song you like and give it a shot. Worked for me.
On top of what you're already doing, buy a chord book and teach yourself to play many many chords.
Rock/Metal
Try seven nation army ,nothing else matters than. (from tabs)
Don't be afraid to mess around and discover new things, the guitar is extremely versatile and allows so much creativity. Also practice is key, you have to practice constantly if you really want to get good. I know that is a cliche thing to say but it's honestly true.
How about first learning to post this in the right section, you should post this in the music section.
How about first learning to post this in the right section, you should post this in the music section.
How about you shut up, music section is purely for discussing music and not for asking advice, posting in the guitar thread wouldn't help atall, since he wouldn't get any advice, this is the right place to post
The most important thing in learning to play guitar is that you must not ever give it up. If you keep playing every day or even every 2 days you'll get better and better, and you'll want to play more and more.

Its very unpopulated, but still the best place for advice.
There's no need to argue. If this is the wrong section i will get banned for it, simple as that.
Learn chords and play songs. Google your favorite songs + chords. Try to play along! Chords: http://chordfind.com/ - If you have a time limit or something, skip all the 7-chords for now! - You should be able to pass all these steps easily in maybe a week if you practice a few hours each day. Which is no time at all when it comes to learning an instrument. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 1: Beginner Baby Start with regular Major- and Minor chords. Start with the open ones. These are: C D, Dm E, Em G A, Am -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonus Stage 1 If you want to, learn the open 7-chords as well (they are easy, but not as commonly used in rock/metal). D7, Dm7 E7, Em7 G7 A7, Am7 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 2: First Challenge Learn some special chords that are very common (it's a chord with another bass note): C/B (for example would be a C major chord but with a B-note as bass instead of a C-note). A/G A/F♯ D/F♯ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 3: Rocker Dude Learn power chords aka 5-chords. Typically not used when playing acoustic guitar, but extremely common in hard rock and metal. They are very simple and very easy. If you can play one then you can play all. C5, C♯5, D5, ..... , B5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 4: Chords of Hell Learn to play barre chords. These are usually pretty frustrating when starting out. But you must learn them sooner or later. What's great about these chords is that while they might be uncomfortable to finger, they are very easy to memorize because they follow a pattern. If you want to, learn the 7-variants while you're at it. They're easy and it doesn't hurt to know them. (Keep in mind that the open chords you've learned previously can also be played barred. Try that out, it's good practice). Start with: F, Fm (+ F7, Fm7) B, Bm (+ B7, Bm7) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 5: The Final Boss Then the rest: F♯, F♯m (+ F♯7, F♯m7) G♯, G♯m (+ G♯7, G♯m7) C♯, C♯m (+ C♯7, C♯m7) D♯, D♯m (+ D♯7, D♯m7) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonus Stage 2 / Beyond The Basics Now you should hopefully be able to play all Major and Minor chords, and maybe even the 7-variants. If you feel comfortable with all these chords, then grats, you can now play camp fire guitar. Just play a lot and things will smoothen out quickly. There are of course more chords (sus, dim, Maj and such). Look them up if you want. They are usually much more common in jazz than anything else though. --- In conclusion: Learn all Major and Minor chords (including barred). Learn 7-chords, 5-chords, and special chords.
barre chords are faggots. I hate them so much. it's just a matter of finger strength along your whole index finger with those though
barre chords are faggots. I hate them so much. it's just a matter of finger strength along your whole index finger with those though
That sounds like it would hurt when practising for the first time.
No pain - no gain.
No pain - no gain.
I'm okay with this
You wanna play metal music? Forget about chords, chords are hard, boring, and a waste of time if you're playing metal music. Focus on the riffs and power chords. Also get an electric guitar, acoustic guitars are way too big and hard to play for metal music. Music recommendations? Metallica when you get better in playing. [editline]17th January 2012[/editline] You can trust me, I've played the guitar for 5 years and I can master all of Iron Maiden's and Metallica's songs.
Ok you can do what Garik said too. Just don't become one of those "guitarists" who can't play anything without tabs and don't know how to play the simplest chord progressions.

How long have you been playing guitar?
Just checked out a couple of your videos..You're great! How long have you been playing guitar?
5 years Also, my advice is to practice alot
I somewhat agree with what Garik said. Learning a bunch of chords at first is kinda hard and will make your motivation go down. If you're starting to learn, you have to make sure that you love what you're doing. I'd recomand having fun with power chords at first ; they're easy and it gives you a good sound. Also, if you like video games, there is one called "Rocksmith" (by Ubisoft) where you can plug in your guitar. It really is cool, because it tracks your progression and makes it harder if you're doing well. Here's an exemple :
Let me just point you over in our direction: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1092879 We don't bite, you can gather a lot of information from us in this thread by browsing the thread and just asking the question. What I did to practice was just play. Learn songs that YOU want to learn. Take a whole month to learn a song inside out if it's that complicated. Just play and it'll come. Google helps too
Yeah I would also recommend to pick up an electric guitar as soon as possible and start playing riffs and power chords all the way. I just thought since you only got an acoustic at the moment, might as well take the time to learn the chords. You must learn them sooner or later anyway.
