I just found out that the Asus UX31A isn't upgradable, so I'm at a total loss as to what I should be buying now.
So, I'm trying to find a laptop that's small and light with a long battery life. I'm planning on using it for very, very light gaming, near-constant note-taking, and some programming. Although it's a stretch, a matte screen would be nice as well.
So, I decided to go down the route of ultrabooks, and I'm not sure if it's a very good option. Right now, I have my eye on the Samsung Series 5 and HP Envy, but the former doesn't seem to be getting positive reviews and the latter is, well, an HP, and I haven't heard great things about their build quality. I'd end up replacing the hard drive with an SSD and adding a second stick of RAM to either of these.
The other option I'm currently considering is the Asus UX32A-DB51, but that's out of stock on Newegg. Same SSD and second stick of ram thing apply here if it can be upgraded, but I can't find a solid answer on this.
IF there's a better option available, I'd really like to know what it might be. I don't want to end up dropping a ton of money on something that's going to run like shit or run into issues constantly.
I have the UX32VD (The same thing as the 32A, except with a GPU and more ports) and it's the best laptop I've ever used. The 4GB it comes with is not much, but I put an 8GB stick in it for a total 10GB and it's awesome. Battery life is kinda meh (4-5 hours) but maybe the 32A is better in that regard, having no GPU and all.
4-5 hours might be sufficient for my use, and the GPU and 1080p screen sound very appealing. I'll see if I can save enough to buy the UX32VD and some upgrades.
If not, I'll probably buy a UX32A.

Oh, well apparently the UX32A-DB51 has been discontinued.
Was looking at the exact shit you're considering ~4-5 months ago, ended up with a Vaio S13A and couldn't be happier
Upgradable, ultrabook weight, excellent battery life, cooling and build quality
Though if an average quality TN display (despite 1600x900 resolution) for its price bracket would put you off, stick to the 15" model or the Asus you're looking at

wat. Maybe they just replaced it with a W8 version under another name
I think its successor is the VivoBook S400.
