Coca-Cola has been forced to withdraw a Twitter advertising campaign after a counter-campaign by Gawker tricked it into tweeting large chunks of the introduction to Hitler’s Mein Kampf.
For the campaign, which was called “Make it Happy” and introduced in an ad spot during the Super Bowl, Coke invited people to reply to negative tweets with the hashtag “#MakeItHappy”.
The idea was that an automatic algorithm would then convert the tweets, using an encoding system called ASCII, into pictures of happy things – such as an adorable mouse, a palm tree wearing sunglasses or a chicken drumstick wearing a cowboy hat.
In a press release, Coca-Cola said its aim was to “tackle the pervasive negativity polluting social media feeds and comment threads across the internet”.
But Gawker, noticing that one response had the “14 words” white nationalist slogan re-published in the shape of a dog, had other ideas.
The media company’s editorial labs director, Adam Pash, created a Twitter bot, @MeinCoke, and set it up to tweet lines from Mein Kampf and then link to them with the #MakeItHappy tag – triggering Coca-Cola’s own Twitter bot to turn them into cutesy pictures.
The result was that for a couple of hours on Tuesday morning, Coca-Cola’s Twitter feed was broadcasting big chunks of Adolf Hitler’s text, albeit built in the form of a smiling banana or a cat playing a drum kit.
companies should know better than to run any automated social media stuff at this point, it always gets abused
As funny as this is, any credibility Gawker likes to pretend it has is getting shoveled into the garbage.
Thanks Gawker now the masses can learn about the Jewish problem.
Doing something like this is the equivalent of not sanitizing inputs on websites. You are basically creating an open portal for abuse.
Maybe it's because I have had my "innocence" ruined by being on the internet, but this doesn't seem like something so terrible that it should be removed.
Looks like Gawker is just reminding us how terrible they are.
Wasn't the whole purpose of the bot to turn negative shit into posetive shit? They're taking it down for doing exactly what it was designed to do...
You cannot defend this or say it's naivetie on cokes part. This was an effort by a company, a news media site to shut down an ad campaign that wanted to try and bring some levity to the internet. Gawker just wants to spread hateful bullshit as you can see.
Isn't Gawker against that whole GamerGate thing, which is about harassing innocent people on the internet? Why are they participating in harassment themselves? Isn't spreading anti-Semitic rhetoric in an attempt to make a company withdraw their advertising campaign considered harassment?

Gamergate isn't about spreading harassment. If you listen to gawker, sure it is, but gawker advocates for bullying, advocates for harassment, and engages in such themselves under the guise of righteous behaviour.
(i dont actually believe that gamergate is about harrassment)

Gamergate is barely harassing, its mostly aGG that is harassing.
Also, ruining another company's ad campaign seems kinda unprofessional. Funny, yeah. But this is from a company specializing in Journalism and media.
The campaign was probably bound to be ruined anyways, but god damn, Gawker.
And what a way to open yourself up for a lawsuit if your company makes a concerted effort to do it.

I like it how gawker cries about evil hackers and neckbeards daily and then does this

Nah, for some reason Gawker can get away with doing literally anything, post proof of their hypocrisies and somehow they still keep getting those click dollars

It took one of their senior staff to promote bullying during National Bullying Prevention Month and a shittonne of mails to sponsors for Gawker to take millions of damages in sponsorship loss.
You would think someone at Gawker would say "Hey we're having enough of a problem with our image as it is, could you possibly not do that?" But I await with the glee the inevitable article from one of their sites saying along the lines "Hey guys, look! We took down Coke!"

Was there actual damage? I don't follow Gamergate really but I thought Intel was back up in full force and that Gawker hasn't actually been losing any money
"using an encoding system called ASCII"

A bunch of advertisers pulled out right after Sam Biddle's tweet. Interesting enough, the whole incident also led to the discovery that they were falsely claiming certain companies were advertising on their advertisers page.
Hitler warned us about 9/11!!!! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!!

Wow, that's just, wow.
"Happiness has been destroyed, for now."
Gawker is pretty much comic book levels of evil at this point.
