Early access has been less about testing a game and more about getting to play the game early and get spoon-fed more content quicker than full releases. They use this as an excuse to never release the game so they use the early access to excuse piss poor performance and optimization thatll never get fixed
Early access has the same problem as patreon funded games, with a steady stream of money there's no incentive to actually finish a game and be done with it.
Having played 7D2D on and off since Alpha 10, I agree with the sentiment that it feels as if the game's in development hell. Major content patches are really infrequent, and it doesn't help that the devs often hype releases into oblivion, only to delay them for weeks. That being said, the devs have been making a much better effort at keeping the community updated on their progress, slow as it is. One of the team members has been regularly posting videos showing what they're working on, which is nice to see.
I legit want to see early access removed. It's abused constantly. Replace it with a less shitty system mate.
God the salt in those comments "IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE GAME DON'T PLAY IT IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE GAME DON'T PLAY IT IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE GAME DON'T PLAY IT IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE GAME DON'T PLAY IT IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE GAME DON'T PLAY IT"
To me, a developer should only be allowed to use Early Access if their game is within a year of completion. They HAVE to have a set date that is no further than a year away from release(maybe two. I don't know what would be a more fair amount). On top of that, people who buy a game EA should get an exception to the refund policy that allows them to refund the game regardless of how long they've had the game or how many hours put into it. If a developer is being really shitty, all the EA supporters will have the option to get their money back with no questions asked.
The idea behind early access is noble but the actual execution ( by the devs themselfs ) is horrible, i have seen all sorts of games that DONT belong in EA at all ( Horror games, and such ) . and the usual dev excuse " I think that with the feedback gathered in EA i can make a better game", When thats the case they might as well just get a playtesting group and avoid early access
It's a shame really, for all the good games where the developers keep in touch with fans, give consistent updates and eventually release, there's always a bunch more games like this eternally stuck in this state.
The problem with 7 Days to Die is they've spent the past few years CONSTANTLY re-working the exact same gameplay mechanics. It seems like they're never happy with anything they do and their time just gets spent in the same areas, gripping them in a constant loop. The only major thing they've gotten done is the mocap animations on zombies, but even those are glitchy as all hell sometimes. Porting the game to console is just yet another abyssal waste of time on top of that. I'll be amazed if this ever gets finished.

Prison Architecht and Kerbal Space Program are two other prolific examples that have actually released from early access. It's just something about these survival games in general, a genre where there is no actual fully released product yet, that gets stuck in these awful development cycles. Maybe it's scope, maybe it's that they have no fucking idea what they're doing.

Early access is both a blessing and a curse. It got bad games (DayZ/H1Z1) that don't keep promises or takes too long, you got pure scam (The stomping land) and you got, in those, some games where the developer know that he wanna do a survival games, where they want to work on it, like rust and ARK for example.
Basically the problem is that survival games are pretty shitty and are just being pumped out in droves on early access to make quick cash because people keep buying the same game with different coats of paint.

And yeah Rust is a Facepunch game, but its in the same boat as all the other survival clones on early access right now.
Rust has been in early access for 3 years, when are they going to finish the game?
You say this, but we're on a forum for a game developer who has had a game in early access for years now.
So the fuck what?
Rust has been in early access for 3 years, when are they going to finish the game?
never, look at garrysmod. Garry will work on it for a few more years before handing off developement to 2-3 other volunteer devs and work on something different and never look back
Even though I've grown to dislike the entire genre, Rust is not a good example of shitty Early Access mentalities. I read their updates (even though I don't play the game) because I enjoy the insight into their development practices and I've seen them do more in a week than many of these other Early Access titles do in half a year. That said I have a personal distaste for any Early Access title that has been EA for over a year, regardless of the quality.

I'm pretty sure the game is pretty close to release. The reason why? Well they said that the game is close to going gold, which is why they released it on the PS4 and Xbone so soon. And after Alpha 14 which had a ton of content, not just reworked mechanics, almost an entirely different game, and it seems to be doing the same with Alpha 15, the game has gotten a lot better. They actually are bothering to finish this game, it isn't in Development Hell, and it's looking pretty good so far. Tons of fun. [editline]9th September 2016[/editline] I've gone through the posts in this thread and replied to some. I am defending this game because this game is great, and so far it's been everything that I wanted and more. And they aren't saying any release date, they are just saying when it's ready. Early access was a mistake
Yeah, I'm not getting the hate for Rust still being in early access. They're still adding quite a few things to the game every week, keeping their players informed, and reworking entire mechanics. Really if you have a fully released game you shouldn't be reworking mechanics on a scale that Rust is.
The best part is they had the audacity to port the game to consoles :goodjob:
Also DayZ.
Absolutely fantastic game, I've bought it several times for different people just to share it. The development may seem slow at times, but the updates really do feel quite big when released. I do hope they continue to focus on the PC version instead of consoles, however.
Say what you will, but ive followed this games development since its earliest builds and these guys have been steadily updating the game with good content and they have some of the best PR ive seen for an indie game. 7DTD is an example of decently successful Early Access, if you disagree go look at screenshots of alpha 1 and compare them to recent screenshots, the game has come a loooong way.
I legit want to see early access removed. It's abused constantly. Replace it with a less shitty system mate.
have it's done by the date is says ( maybe forgive one or two delays ) or get a full fucking god dam refund
have it's done by the date is says ( maybe forgive one or two delays ) or get a full fucking god dam refund
That could make things somwhat worse, though. Developers could just hurry whatever they've got to release before that date and then say "Oh we had to change a few features but we've fully released now!" and use the "things change, but we might add the rest for free later!" excuse for missing content or features. Either that, or they'd just rush it to get it done by a deadline in the first place.
hey what happened to this game? the terrain is no longer blocks?
So the fuck what?

To me, a developer should only be allowed to use Early Access if their game is within a year of completion.
???
