So, I'm looking into upgrading my computer.
Currently I'm drooling over the Intel i7 but i need to get a new motherboard because i have the wrong socket.
The question is, should i wait to buy the i7 and a new motherboard or should i get them as fast as i can?
No reason to get the i7 now if you can't use it.

Can't get any more simple and sensible as this.
But if I'm going to buy an i7 i WILL buy a new motherboard.
Theres nothing wrong with getting the i7 and MOBO at the same time
Save yourself $200+ and get an i5-750 or 860 instead, HT isn't going to give you that much of a performance boost unless you do stuff like photoshop or 3ds max all day.

I sometimes map but my maps are small and just for fun.
So what's the difference between the i5 and the i7?

860 have HyperThreading.
Lynnfield has less PCI-e bandwidth and runs dual channel memory.
Some claim Bloomfield overclocks better.
Maybe if i tell what i usually do with my computer.
I play games such as TF2 and Gmod. I make lots of movies in Gmod and i render them in 720p at 30 FPS. I record at 1080p at 60 fps. I like to play crysis and such games because it's always fun to mess around with the physics and the silly AI.
Current build:
AMD Athlon dual core at 3 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 5770
4GB RAM
I don't have a clue what motherboard i have but it's made by MSI.
It's something about a "Platinium edition".
Get speccy. Depending on your current RAM, you may have to buy new ones.
A lot of people are going to flame me for this but check out the new AMD X6 CPUs as well. They have a better price/performance ratio.
Is that a hexagonal core??

X3440 is a better solution, best of both worlds for 40 bucks cheaper/more expensive from both
Is that a hexagonal core??
It's a true 6 core cpu, ie it has 6 physical cores.
Sounds sexy. I also heard there will be an octal-core version.

Here's a review of the phenom II X6 1090T:

As you can see an overclocked X6 1090T scores higher than any i5 and every i7 other than the monstrous Core i7 980x which is also a hexacore but costs $1200 alone.

It performs better than a i7 980x at STOCK SPEEDS
who leaves an i7 980x at stock speeds? no one.

Of course because it's overclocked. I have an overclocked i5 750 that out performs the 1090T at stock speeds.

But X6 1055T and 1090T are 200 and 300 dollar CPUs. i7 980x is a 1200 dollar CPU.

Haha, oh wow. Forums on shopping websites are always just hillarious.

This man bleeds correctness. If you want a total monster CPU, get the 6-core. I don't know how the stock cooler is on that, but you might be interested in buying a new, better. So it doesn't overheat.

Maybe in clock speeds, but that doesn't really matter when you have 6 fucking cores.
Will the six core fit on the same socket an Athlon fits on?

1090T is a 300 dollar CPU. For 1090, you can get bloomfield which beats 1090T.
Also 6cores only function better in programs that support the extra threads

But you can still reserve certain cores for more data-consuming programs.

Did you even read the reviews? They are pretty much as fast as each other at stock speeds and the 1090T EASILY hits 4.1ghz at which point becomes way faster than a bloomfield cpu.
I'd say go with 6core one, it'd make the most sense.
