• Macbook Graphics Card Help!!!

I have a black MacBook, about 3 years old, with OSX, 250 GB hard drive and 4 GB RAM. I downloaded the Steam client as well as Half-Life 2 and Garry's Mod, but I can't play them because an error reads that the games do not support the graphics processor (Intel ?) on my Mac. Is there any way around this issue? I paid $20 for the games and feel ripped off. Please help! Also, I was thinking maybe Lion OS would help update/upgrade my laptop, not sure though if that is a solution.
Nope, since your laptop was designed with serious work in mind. (User was banned for this post ("Help or don't reply." - cosmic duck))
an OS upgrade will solve all of your problems [sp]~because it's Apple~[/sp] (User was banned for this post ("Help or don't reply." - cosmic duck))
Get a proper computer. (User was banned for this post ("Help or don't reply." - cosmic duck))
It's funny because if OP had been a windows user everyone would have just told him the correct answer (his graphics card sucks) but instead they decided to fanboy it up yet again.
This thread ate my brain cells. (User was banned for this post ("Help or don't reply." - cosmic duck))

Macbooks since about last year don't have very powerful graphics processors (and even now they aren't that much more powerful), so graphics intensive applications like steam games won't be able to run. This is why you are getting the error. There is no effective workaround that i know of, if you wanted to play the games, your only real option is to play them on a more powerful mac or PC. Since you bought game which are SteamPlay enabled, you can download the Mac and PC versions without having to pay for the game again.
Do you know the exact specs? If its just a Macbook and not a pro it might not have a dedicated gpu, and intel chipsets 3 years ago won't be powerful enough to run Source engine (at least not without some hacks). If you want to run Source games you'll just need to buy a new laptop either Windows or OSX, steam means you can run it on both. Even if you have a later Macbook I would probably suggest a small windows partition for gaming, since you'll get the absolute best performance that way despite inconvenience.
It's like trying to get Crysis working on a Commodore-64, it's just never gonna happen.
You could try and install windows using boot camp and see if that allows you to play them. I really don't get what is so dumb/funny about this post, MisterM said the same dam thing.
You could try and install windows using boot camp and see if that allows you to play them.
You'll at least be able to get them started if you go with this route, but I doubt they're going to run well at all.
I've seen people playing gmod on an intel GMA before, it's not pretty, but it works. Would probably work under Windows. Saying that you've been ripped of is dumb though, it's not Garry's job to check if you can run the game or not, that's entirely your own fault.
Intel GMA will generally work on Source, if it doesn't work in OSX try Windows
You've got a "Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory" as per this article. I know because there's only one black model of Macbook on the market. It's just not supported off the bat, but it would be interesting to know your version of OSX (Apple Menu > About this Mac) because there may be workarounds.
The Intel GMA 3150 in my netbook could play stuff like GMod and Portal at a playable framerate, and IIRC, that's around the same performance as a 950. Might want to try it on Windows, while using the dx_level startup command + a FPS config. That's what I did. EDIT: 1500th post. :buddy:

If you are willing to spend some money, you may be able to buy an external graphics card. I'm not sure how well they work as I have never actually used one.

I wouldn't get Lion though, tbqh. Retail stores don't stock it any more with the new OSX release, but you can still get it online. That link assumes you live in the US though!
The first guys should stop being such asses, like someone else said, if it was a Windows computer they'd say it's a bad graphics card, but if it's Apple.. "APPLE SUCKS BALLS" I do agree it's overpriced, but seriously what the fuck. Get off the fanboyism. Anyways, yeah it's probably not good enough of a GPU.
Source games don't run on the older macbooks under OSX, because there is a function in OpenGL that they don't support. Bootcamp to windows, that way you use directx and you might be able to run them.
