So, first, here's how the BBC reported this story:
A school was placed in emergency lockdown after reports a gunman fired shots at school workmen, police said.
Armed police were called to Highcliffe School in Christchurch shortly after midday.
The school was placed in emergency lockdown, but has since reopened.
A 26-year-old man from Christchurch was initially held on suspicion of firearm offences but was de-arrested at the scene. A number of air pellets were found.
Police said there was no risk to pupils or staff. No-one was injured.
The full article can be found here.
And if you want a laugh, here's the Daily Mail's article on the scenario.
And the actual story was that some guy fired an air rifle at some pigeons, and (possibly) a pellet hit one of the workers outside the school. They sent armed police to his house (which admittedly is very near the school), but not to the actual school, and the 'lockdown' was teachers telling us not to go out of the gates. This is the third time we've been in the national news in two years, and every time it's been this kind of bonkers shit. We're a tiny school in the middle of nowhere, I don't get how this keeps happening.
"school and gun?
hop on that fucking gold mine before anyone else gets there first"
This is why all teachers need conceal carry so when they come under attack from pellets they can just fan out and take down any threats.

"Teachers required, must have military background, preferred ex-SAS to defend against pellets from some guy shooting pigeons."
"Apply now."

Funnily enough, 50 years ago we would have been in the 'SEEH MOINE' part of the UK. Nowadays we all speak with slightly posh-sounding RP accents or Estuary English, though.

it wasn't about that, it was just the bizarreness of the situation in the article and how it reminded me of this scene in Hot Fuzz
but I suppose Poe's Law is in effect
Well doesn't look like the BBC overhyped it, they just reported what happened.
Daily mail, of course, did though. This tweet is great:

You're generally worried? Not sure what that has to do with anything really.
This would have never happened under the rule of Miss Potts.

This girl works at the school. She said she noticed the mistake right after she posted it, and she's annoyed that out of all the tweets about it, it had to be the one she made with the spelling mistake.

Wait, did you go to Highcliffe recently? She only left at the end of last year.

Wait, the Police isn't usually armed in the UK. Forgot about that.
Seems like a cool gig, get payed to kill flying rats.

I'd love to have a guy like that come clean up San Marcos of its grackle plague but unfortunately they're a protected species and you can't dispatch them.
People have tried using passive means to make them go elsewhere but nothing works.
People that are uneducated on weapons in general are hysterical and filled with hyperbole. It's quite a cute thing to witness.
