• The separation of church and state (meaning?)

Hey! I just have a quick question, so any response would be appreciated. My mother and I have been having this debate on the meaning of "the separation of church and state". This argument was started after I heard Rick Santorum on NBC talking about how he wants religion to have a bigger role in our government. My mother insists on saying that the separation of church and state was created to protect religious freedom from the government (I agree). But she refuses to admit that it also intended to protect the government from religious influence. So I was wondering if anyone could help me prove my point, or prove me wrong. !!!!and thanks for your response!!!!
Religion should not influence any decisions of yours that can infringe on other people's beliefs or lack of. Therefore why should something that can and will affect all the population have anything to do with a belief system

This inherently means that it is not meant to protect the government from religious influences because everyone is free to believe as they wish, and act (thus try to govern) as they see fit and as they believe (in accordance to the laws of course). If it were meant to protect the government from religious influences this would mean that all legislation would be based on scientific facts, and clearly it is not.
Thanks for the responses, i see what you guys mean.
