US urges Britain and France to join in supplying arms to Syrian rebels as MPs fear that UK will be drawn into growing Sunni-Shia conflict
Washington’s decision to arm Syria’s Sunni Muslim rebels has plunged America into the great Sunni-Shia conflict of the Islamic Middle East, entering a struggle that now dwarfs the Arab revolutions which overthrew dictatorships across the region.
For the first time, all of America’s ‘friends’ in the region are Sunni Muslims and all of its enemies are Shiites. Breaking all President Barack Obama’s rules of disengagement, the US is now fully engaged on the side of armed groups which include the most extreme Sunni Islamist movements in the Middle East.
The Independent on Sunday has learned that a military decision has been taken in Iran – even before last week’s presidential election – to send a first contingent of 4,000 Iranian Revolutionary Guards to Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad’s forces against the largely Sunni rebellion that has cost almost 100,000 lives in just over two years. Iran is now fully committed to preserving Assad’s regime, according to pro-Iranian sources which have been deeply involved in the Islamic Republic’s security, even to the extent of proposing to open up a new ‘Syrian’ front on the Golan Heights against Israel...
In love and war, fog shrouds all.
Well, this is really going to help ease tensions between the USA and Iran.
Regardless of who you are siding with in this war, more people to fight in it is the very last thing it needs.
It begins.

Anybody remember the Cold War? No? Politically opposed countries arming parties they sympathize with and watching them duke it out(or outright intervening) doesn't ring any bells?

Is that Ron Paul in the nuclear blast?

This whole entire situation is just terrifying.
' Lets all just throw our troops at one part of the globe and see whats what'...
Well that went well.
Is that Ron Paul in the nuclear blast?
Probably to remind you that you could have prevented this.
More fuel for the fire, yippee. Hope it ends soon one way or another
I'm thinking the USA knew something along these lines would have had to happen
honestly like it doesnt take a genius to figure out that someone who is politically opposed to the US would send troops and armaments to the opposing side in a war where no one side has the majority of public support
I fear Syria will become scorched earth after this battle
They had a chance to go to Geneva for a diplomatic solution and the rebels refused to go until they got guns shit is now fucked either way and its there own fault in the end whatever the outcome.

Yes it is their own fault they wanted to stop the regime from massacring town after town, rather than entering talks they had absolutely no actual power in.

Look harder
we should not arm anyone
Welp, here we go.
we should not arm anyone
Yeah we should just let a brutal regime crush everything in its path. Despite over a 100,000 people dead already.

The rebels are fucking bonkers too, also islamists. What makes you think the rebels will be able to run the country properly enough to rebuild it anyways? They don't give me the impression of organized at all.

The game plan was to force Assad out and progress towards a more democratic institution where you don't have to be a bloody alawite to get anywhere.

Yeah, they said the same thing about Iraq and look at them now. They're hardly a democracy now.

Its nothing like Iraq lol.
Iraq was a stable country before.
Syria is a bloody mess, something needs to be done otherwise we're going to be hearing stories of mass graves for the next 20 years.
I love how we are already getting into another war it seems, when there are much larger issues we could be handling.
we'll be hearing a lot worse then mass graves if we arm the rebels

Why?
Almost all the atrocities have been committed by the regime according to the UN. Not to mention the thousands and thousands of civilians that have been disappeared by the secret police, including children.
