• How many Facepunch Users are comfortable with someone remote assisting into your computer?
    51 replies, posted
Greetings, I am a Senior in college working for my IT department over the summer. We use remote assistance frequently when connecting to satellite campuses. Typically we are on the phone with the customer, while being connected to their computer in order to explain to them what exactly it is we are doing. I spend most of my time on the forums replying to people in the Technical support section. However, not all issues can be fixed with a link and a reply. At my IT department we use Remote Assistance, GoToAssist, Remote Desktop Connection, and Dameware Mini Remote control in order to assist customers from satellite campuses. How many of you would feel comfortable with someone remoting into your computer in order to assist you on these forums?
It depends on who is doing it. If they are a reputable, respected person on Facepunch I would have no problem. But if it's just your average joe, I wouldn't even let them have my IP address (not that they could do anything with it).
Most of my friends are VERY bad with computers. No.
As JWJ said, if they are reputable then probably yes but I would still be sitting infront of the computer at all times.
What JWJ said other than the IP thing I am not fussed who has my IP as it is dynamic
There are varying levels of letting people interact with your desktop though, you don't need to hand them control, if someone was paranoid about it, all they need do is share out their desktop and get walked through the solution step by step. I imagine this could be pretty frustrating for the person giving support though!
i don't like anyone but me on my computer honestly. All my friends are rubbish on the computer except one who actually knows more then me about it, but he still makes more mistakes then i do. (he still swears by IE too, despite getting several viruses using it)
Perhaps a moderator could post and or sticky a list of trusted members in TS. We would provide some type of identification proving we're not BS'ing the moderators or the members.
I do it quite a bit for my friends, and if I know the person I don't mind. As long as I'm sitting there seeing what they're doing. Also after tidying up the desktop a bit, shit gets messy.
I've got logmein installed on every single one of my family's computers and a fair number of my more IT challenged friends, for this kind of thing.
Depends on who is tampering with my PC.
Yeah, I'd only let people I know are trustworthy do something like that.
I wouldn't let the average joe do it, but I would probably let a reputable person do it, as long as I'm at the computer at ALL times and I could stop the connection at any time in case I suspect something.
I would let them as long as I knew what they were doing at all times.
They wouldn't know how to use my computer anyway. Which would be quite ironic.
As long as I have some control over what's actually happening, fine by me. But I would never, never dare to leave the room.
Clearly people do not trust members of Facepunch to RA into their machines. (55.56% said not at all) What could be done in order to gain trust from users? How would users know that the person RA'ing in is trustworthy?
I'm very paranoid. Not only about my own computer, but about anything. as JWJ said, it depends on the person, but let's say it's a complete stranger, then I'd be somewhat comfortable with him letting him do his thing, but only if he was a member on facepunch. If he weren't from facepunch however, I'd be watching his every move, with a hand on my power supply.
I won't let anyone touch my PC unless it is a good friend that knows what he is doing, and even then i stay to watch over their shoulder, i am kinda paranoid when it comes down to my PC.
LogMeIn is amazing. I would die for the Control Center or whatever their management software is called. I have a trial and it is god.
Depends on who is doing it and what program. For example, I'd be very comfortable if someone was using something like TeamViewer, because if he does something dumb, I can just take control without he being able to do anything. I would also be comfortable if it was some kind of company or a friend that I know personally or someone I know quite well on the internet. If it's a random person that I do not know at all, then it's a no go, but in general I'm quite relaxed on it, mainly because they can't really do terrible things with it.
Perhaps a moderator could post and or sticky a list of trusted members in TS. We would provide some type of identification proving we're not BS'ing the moderators or the members.
Please no. People would get refused because the mods didn't like them, or because some posters don't like them. I mean, there's still a bunch of idiots on here who tell me to "go back to the Linux forum" when I argue about Windows Open Source Software. Do you really want those same retards to vote on who's a respectable member and who isn't? Would I be refused because I don't praise and jack off to everything Microsoft does? Or because I once argued about X feature of C++ in the programming forums? What about when someone gets fucked over? A big part of technical support is building trust with your customer through actual physical contact (teehee). I feel a lot confident towards someone else if I know who he is, where he lives, and what his phone number is. It's a lot harder to get that confidence through MSN, Skype voice chat and Facepunch. The only way you can get people to trust you is by word of mouth, and then being a good guy when dealing with them. Being a respected member of a forum is pretty meaningless. I wouldn't trust Panda X to repair my computer even though he is pretty respectable here. And I don't expect him to trust me repairing his computer even though I'm pretty sure I'm somewhat known around here. I win my trust over my clients by having superior technical knowledge, skills (both technical and social) to other people in my field, and giving my card around. I'd expect any other Facepunch member to do the same.
Depends, If someone like hezzy was to do it, I would have no problem, but if some 10'er with 50 posts was to, I would be iffy. It really depends on the person.
I don't let anyone use my computer after one of my friends was deleting "unnecessary files" and deleted my entire steam folder [editline]03:40PM[/editline] And another incident where some guy downloaded feet porn on my comp [editline]03:41PM[/editline] and feet images
I don't want people to delete my porn collection.
No. I like the feeling of fixing my own problems on my own. Not to say I never ask for help however. But I don't get to the point that I have someone do it for me.
I rather have my best friend who I can trust that won't put a virus in my system, than a Facepuncher.
There are a handful I would trust with it. Hexxeh, JWJ, Birkett, maybe Panda X or Rixxz2. But most of you I wouldn't let anywhere near my computer, especially considering how little effort it takes to totally destroy a Linux machine if you can get in.
I would only do it if I knew the guy in person.
If I were to personally know the person then yeah I wouldn't mind. Anyone over the internet who I have never actually met would be a no go.
