So basically you pay to $160 more than the normal game, for a year's worth of what is exactly the same game. Makes sense.
so they're gonna monetize FTB
It's a good idea for people that don't really understand how to set up servers and stuff.
Aren't realms the same as dedicated servers, but with presets?
Yes. They are essentially first party servers. Don't have to be worried about being screwed like a ho. *cough*
they said it's aimed mainly at kids and families. so people like us obviously won't apply, but for little jimmy who just wants to play minecraft with his dad, it's perfect. poor jimmy's dad was in prison once or twice for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family when they fell on hard times and he didn't get a chance to learn how to set up servers. and now when little jimmy sees him once a week when it's his turn for custody and not jimmy's bitch of a mom, he can play minecraft with his son and enjoy the way life could have been if it wasn't for jimmy's mom. stupid slut
And then Minecraft Realms becomes the next kid fad, like Pokémon cards, beyblades, moshi monsters and all the rest. Especially if the subscription comes on pre-paid cards in newsagents like you get with Bin Weevils and Club Penguin.
I honestly don't see a problem with this. Its a pre-made, first-party server system. The interface is likely easier to use than normal dediboxes, parents get a simple way to set it up and through someone they're already familiar with (Mojang), its easier to get the server paid for as it can be done with prepaid cards, and the parents themselves get more control over who their kids are socializing with online. And at $10 to $15 a month? Thats cheaper than a great deal of server providers. Why is this bad?
I wonder if Mojang will remember their promise to everybody who bought it during alpha that they'd get all future content for free. Doubt it.

Doubt it.
I wonder if macdoo999 will remember that Mojang already clarified that statement when Minecraft for XBLA and Minecraft Pocket came out. Doubt it.
Hiring a server isn't content
I'm aware of that. I was thinking more in terms of what happens if this goes successfully. If this works, would they want to do more subscription based ventures in the future? If they do, would they remember then? [editline]-[/editline] Didn't really mean the "doubt it" up there. Mojang have been pretty good at holding true to their word so far and I just kind of jammed some unnecesary sarcastic dipshittery on for whatever reason.
Releasing a retail version of Minecraft makes sense and is absolutely reasonable. But that subscription idea is absolute rubbish, firs off it's far to expensive. Also I don't see that potential in Minecraft Realms, is it like a game hub where you can freely access screenshots, data and other infos? I don't know why this service should be there in the first place.
...and not a penny will go towards porting off of Java like any other massively successful developer would do.

I remember when Minecraft was good. Now in two short years after it's release, it's coming up stale
Funny. I actually made a thread about a server subscription on their forums about a week or so ago. I guess they've been thinking about this a while if they've already announced this.
