Family PC - Build or Prebuilt? If build, what parts?

Hello. I was tasked with getting the family a new pc, as theirs is old n' slow. Should I buy a prebuilt, or build it? I'm asking because I know that sometimes low end PCs are cheaper from manufacturers due to economies of scale.
If I build it, what components? They want it for the internet, perhaps some light gaming, as some of my family likes that now. I want to make sure it has adequate performance a few years from now.
I would like to keep this <$500, and already have mouse, keyboard, monitor, and speakers.

Thanks.
Looks good, though I would spend a little extra to get a 500GB HDD.
