• thermal paste?

about to install a new mobo, noticed it didn't come with any thermal paste. I thought you always had to apply some paste when getting a new mobo? or does my intel Q6600 fan already have some as i have read?
look at it does it have paste? answer = yes does it not have paste? answer = no
The paste usually comes attached to the heatsink that's included with the CPU.
but does the paste have to be replaced? it would seem that you would want to apply a new layer of paste when switching mobos
Do it to be on the safe side, you didn't mention this question in the OP.
but i dont have any :(
Well...get some.
Buy some at a computer store.
fook it, i just ordered some off newegg. we have no computer stores around here and im not in the mood to drive out to best buy (despite the fact they have amazing deals - a single tube of thermal paste for only $35!)
I got mine from x for only y.
Thanks for this useful comment when we are simply trying to tell the OP what we preferred, and where would be a good place to buy it.

For the record, my thermal paste came with a Zalman CPU cooler I bought a while back. It resembles a bottle of nail polish.

On Intel CPUs the thermal paste comes preapplied to the bottom of the heatsink. Applying more is probably a very bad idea unless you scrape all the intel paste off first. But why go to all that trouble, I'm rocking a 3.4GHZ overclocked Q9550, stock cooler, stock paste, temperature always remains within acceptable norms. [editline]2nd December 2010[/editline] Just reread your post, if you're moving the heatsink/processor and reseating it on a new mobo, then yes, you'll probably do well by cleaning it off and applying some new shit.

Not very much for an already cool CPU.
jesus christ guys the stock paste looked more like a gray piece of shit on the cpu/heatsink
Don't use thermal paste, or a heatsink. Just simply put an ice cube onto the cpu directly. Post results.
