Right, it's currently summer in the small country known as Sweden.
And what does summer bring us? That's right; Warmth.
Well, after an hour long playtime of GTA 4, I decide that it's a good idea to check my system's temperatures using HWmonitor. What I see baffles me, to say atleast, the temperature of my CPU's fourth core was, wait for it, NINETY-NINE DEGREES CELSIUS.
With the rest of the cores being at around 90 degrees.
Shocked, I close HWmonitor, and let the CPU cool down. After around 3 minutes, it's down at 40 degrees celsius. I then shut the tortured PC down for a major rest.
Now, 40 minutes later, the CPU idles at a pleasant 31 degrees Celsius, with the warmest core being at 36 degrees.
Now, I don't want to expose my system to any potential risk, so I'd believe that a new, aftermarket cooler would be a good idea, seeing as the stock cooler evidently isn't enough.
So, my good people, suggest me a cooler.
(My CPU's an Intel Core i5 750, socket 1156).
Oh, and is this cooler any good? :
http://www.akasa.com.tw/update.php?tpl=product/cpu.product.tpl&no=181&type=CPU%20coolers&type_sub=Retail%20cooler&model=AK-968
And yet another question, is there a huge chance that my CPU took any damage from a temperature that high?

While you're at it, recommend me some good thermal paste.
Owch, make sure your cooler is actually seated properly.
Anyway, the i5s tend to get quite hot and if you're really worried, maybe something like this would work for you.

Well, unless it have un-seated itself, that's not the case, seeing as the warmest it used get after 3 hours of GTA 4, was around 60-70 degrees. And as I said, at idle it doesn't go above 35 degrees.
And watercooling seems rather overkill.
I'd like a nice, heatsink based cooler.

After 30 minutes of BattleField Bad Company 2, these are the temperatures I get:

At idle, same processor as you.
On load it never, ever goes above 60c. Not even in this summer heat.
What do I use?

I swear, this shit is like a ninja in your pc. The GPU fan of my 5870 is louder when it's at under 30% speed, which is pretty damn quiet. The stock 120mm case fans are louder than this cpu cooler. It even ships with electric resistances you hook up to the cabling to make it slower thus quieter. Why you'd need that is totally beyond me though.
shit is pretty big though, bit assembly was easy and as you see, it cools like a pro.

Too expensive for not enough gain.

Basically the best air cooler on the market, you need a bracket though.
As posted in your... Erm... "Other" thread:
Oh god. Anyway. If you have $80 to spend, get the Corsair H50. You won't see the same results as a full water cooling loop, but it definitely beats conventional fans and heatsinks.
Make sure HWmonitor isn't reading anything wrong, because it did for me before I reformatted:

I'm sorry for sounding like an arse by not listening to your suggestions (Not that I don't appreciate them) but, is Arctic Cooling a good brand?
Get a Prolimatech Megahalems with one or two of these.
It will outperform the H50.

Yeah and the S1283 will outperform that with the extra two fans, and outperform it even more if you put two Ultra Kaze fans on it.
[editline]02:00PM[/editline]
This is what you want to get and if you don't you're not getting the most out of your money:
Xigmatek S1283
1 or 2 Scythe Ultra Kaze fans
Tuniq TX-3 thermal paste
Yeah and the S1283 will outperform that with the extra two fans, and outperform it even more if you put two Ultra Kaze fans on it.

A Megahalems definitely outperforms an S1283. And I'm sure most people don't want 2 loud-as-fuck fans.
Not to mention, it doesn't list support for LGA 1156.

Haha those fans aren't loud at all.
[editline]02:11PM[/editline]
Keep in mind your shit cooler costs nearly twice as much.
First of all, the Megahalems doesn't even come with fans and those results don't seem very accurate. It's also testing on LGA 775.
And let's compare the fans I suggested to yours.
Scythe SFF21G = 35 dBA
Scythe "ULTRA KAZE" = 45.9 dBA
I don't enjoy the sound of 35 dBA anyways, I couldn't withstand 46.

So stop holding your case open? It's not like you're going to hear that shit through a decent closed case. I do run Crossfire 4890s and they are the loudest GPUs I've ever had to use, but still.
[editline]02:19PM[/editline]
And what? What do you mean it doesn't come with fans? There's no fucking way it pulls temperatures like that passively, and look at the Frostytech link. Explain the CFM ratings.
I can vouch for the S1283. It's a great performer, especially for the price. There are several coolers that perform better, but they tend to be much more expensive. However, I recommend replacing the stock fan since i5's tend to get pretty warm.
edit: Has anyone else noticed that the majority of the threads like this end up with a few people arguing over benchmarks, etc. and the OP's question is still left unanswered?

They obviously used whatever shit fans they had laying around to get only 80 CFM at 50 dBA.
Another great heatsink is Thermalright's Venomous-X.
No idea why people always get so fussy over fan volume, I run 3 Yate Loon High's at 100% on my rad, with three Corsair Obsidian case fans at 100%, along with two GTX280's whose fans are usually 60-100% and I hardly ever mind it.
If it's really such a problem, just get a fan controller?

Apart from the fact that funning fans at full speed (especially gpu fans) will wear out the bearings real fast, some people don't like the constant buzzing.
Oh, and when those bearings go out, it's gonna start sqealing very loudly. Try not minding it then.

and having to buy an S1283 + LGA 1156 brackets + 2 Ultra Kazes come out to about the same price. Your point?

Your definition of "real fast" must differ from mine.

Checkmate, Clopsy.
Oh shit, you're the GMod Tower Clopsy, aren't you?
To be honest I don't give a shit about the loudness of the fans. I wear a headset which to a large extent blocks external sounds.

Any of the coolers posted would be excellent.

I wear Sennhesier PC350's and I can hear my SFF21G's through my Silverstone Fortress, only slightly. I wouldn't try anything over 40 dBA, but if you're willing to, go for it.
Oh shit, you're the GMod Tower Clopsy, aren't you?
Yes
I use a Cooler Master Hyper N520.. and I'm at 40 celsius at max load. So I will recommend that one.. not so expensive either.
Hm, I just ran a Prime95 torture test for 30 minutes, and the temperatures didn't go above 65 degrees. :raise:
95 ? jesus christ.
I got scared shitless when mine was at 60.
Did you re-seat your heatsink? Were you running it on all four cores?
