• Recovering a modified android device?

I hope this thread is ok in this forum. I'm not very informed when it comes to smartphones. I got a Galaxy S3 for my birthday but it was locked to a single provider, and I recently had to switch networks. My friend told me he'd get my phone unlocked and he did, but it's also rendered it completely useless. Naturally I can't get OS updates, but what bothers me the most is how a bunch of phone settings which were previously available just vanished. And a 100% battery lasts me 1 hour now, not to mention the phone is completely useless when charging, and its just become horribly sluggish. If I were to reset it to factory settings, would it be back to normal? And would it be once again locked to a single network? edit: I think I should have posted this in Technical Support instead. My bad :(

My bad :(
your friend just chose a shit rom and factory reset from inside the phone would do nothing, you'd have to reflash stock android
your friend just chose a shit rom and factory reset from inside the phone would do nothing, you'd have to reflash stock android
so basically I just need to figure out how to install stock firmware? Will it put a restriction on what network SIM card I can use again? Not knowing this is pretty much what's keeping me from trying it.
so basically I just need to figure out how to install stock firmware? Will it put a restriction on what network SIM card I can use again? Not knowing this is pretty much what's keeping me from trying it.
if by stock ROM you mean the one the carrier gave you, then yes it'll be stuck to that one network again
so I'm assuming that flashing any other rom will not. Thank you for your replies, I will try to install a different rom with the help of google
Do your research well. The things you flash must precisely match the model of your phone. If not, you risk leaving it, in worst case, irreparably damaged. Sometimes it is repairable, but you'll need to know what you're doing, or it'll have to be done by professionals who will charge you for it (your warranty is void as your friend has modified your firmware). Also, when you flash it, all data on your phone will be erased (there may be ways to avoid that, but they are inadvisable as they lead to inconsistencies and thus instability). Therefore, make backups on all possible levels first. Now, I don't mean to scare you, lots of people (including me, and obviously your friend) have done this without an issue. Just don't be careless. You might want to simply ask your friend to install a different ROM - the procedure will be the same, he'll just have to use different files than last time,
My friend just got someone else to do it for him, and I don't wanna trust whoever that is again. I followed a guide online and installed the stock firmware for it and it works perfectly now :) thanks for the help
