A Daily Telegraph online poll has revealed that over 80 percent of Brits would rather a repeal on the hand gun ban over various other "new law" choices Last Friday the Daily Telegraph, Britain's most widely read broadsheet newspaper, issued an online poll asking members of the public which proposal they would like to see introduced as a Private Members' Bill in the UK's Parliament.Private Members' Bills are introduced by Members of Parliament or Peers who are not government ministers. The choices include term limits for Prime Ministers, a flat tax, a law to encourage the 'greening' of public spaces and the repealing of Britain's hand gun ban. Following the Dunblane massacre in 1996, in which 16 schoolchildren were killed, Parliament passed The Firearms Act of 1997, which essentially banned handguns for the atrocity. But Britons seem unconvinced by the law. The proposer, known as "Colliemum" asked, "...why should only criminals be 'allowed' to possess guns and shoot unarmed, defenceless citizens and police officers?" While the poll continues, so far over 80 percent of the 11,000+ respondents have told the Telegraph that they want to see the handgun ban repealed. The news comes as America contemplates its own new laws on gun ownership, with British talk show host Piers Morgan claiming to back a UK-style ban for the United States.
http://www.thecommentator.com/article/3644/britain_wants_its_guns_back
They see what goes on in American and they want their guns back?!
Sad that they feel unsafe.
Good, people have the right to choose if they want a handgun or not. I doubt there won't a bunch of background checks and safety courses to get one anyway, it's Britain after all.
This is fucking retarded, 2 dumb cunts kill a soldier and suddenly every fucking dumbass and their mum thinks they need a gun.
idk about you but i like the harsh gun laws here in Australia and i'd imagine it'd be on par with the UK I always feel safe whenever I'm walking home, going to school, going into the city and etc i dont ever feel like i'll be involved in some drive by or have a gun pointed to my head sorry for the unpopular opinion
The second biggest one is flat tax. Glad to see we have our priorities in order.
A Daily Telegraph online poll has revealed that over 80 percent of Brits would rather a repeal on the hand gun ban over various other "new law" choices
Still, this poll does say alot. How can anybody support a ban on guns? If you criminalize weapons only criminals will have weapons. Criminals and the helpful police.
9000 people...
Fuck no, I'd barely trust myself to own a gun, let alone the average mouthbreather
If you criminalize weapons only criminals will have weapons.
Your powers of deduction are fascinating.
Still, this poll does say alot. How can anybody support on guns? If you criminalize weapons only criminals will have weapons. Criminals and the helpful police.
Not even the police in England. Didn't the police have to call a special unit that actually had weapons on those two Somalians?
They see what goes on in American and they want their guns back?!
Take a look at Switzerland. Due to the fact that country doesn't have a military, but has a militia, it ranks 3rd in the highest gun ownership rates in the world. However it stands as having one of the lowest annual homicide rates BY ANY MEANS, and even less so by firearms. The presence of firearms doesn't mean there will be more gun crime. It all comes down to proper regulation. That's the problem with the US. We have shit regulations and make no strong efforts to teach firearm responsibility.
Ask the question again once this "dirty muslim killed my soldier" stuff dies down. I think current gun laws are fine. They allow people to have rifles for sport and recreation but disallow it for protection. If there's a problem with gun crime then the police need to step up. Gun crime is not a big thing at all at here, but I fear that with guns being made readily available to just about anybody (as a result of repealing current bans), this will change.
i would not trust our government to implement this in a way that is not completely retarded
Fuck no, I'd barely trust myself to own a gun, let alone the average mouthbreather
From what I understand you'd still need a license, what's stopping you right now going out and buying a revolver or a rifle? Both options are open but the ability to purchase a semi-automatic handgun makes that significantly more dangerous?
I would support a repeal of the gun ban, there is a lot gun crime around where I live, criminals always manage to get a hold of guns, yet you aren't allowed a gun to defend yourself from them. I'd consider it evening the the playing field for non-criminals.
*Telegraph readers want their guns back.
One of the main reasons I like this country is that I know that not every twerp with an opinion has access to firearms. I suspect that'll never change, but this a worrying statistic. People are fucking stupid.
in fairness, when the other options are along the lines of "Ban spitting" and "term limit on prime ministers", to have that many people choose something a bit more serious shouldn't be surprising.
I REALLY doubt that's representative of the entire population. I don't know anyone who wants guns unbanned.

No guns is kind of part of our national identity now
I've never heard anyone suggest this ever. Even from people who already own firearms here.
Probably get dumbed for this but I would feel far more unsafe if citizens were allowed handguns.
Probably get dumbed for this but I would feel far more unsafe if citizens were allowed handguns.
I don't know why you'd be considered dumb because that's a completely logical feeling
UK gun policy does appear to be working based on flat statistics to be honest. http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/united-kingdom for statistics that seem to be well sourced, at first glance. An important thing to remember is that the UK isn't really comparable to the US in terms of gun control laws at all. There are huge amounts less of stockpiled weapons already in the country, and it's much harder to get one into the country since there are no open land borders so a ban on guns is immediately much more effective than it would be in the US.
Still, this poll does say alot. How can anybody support a ban on guns? If you criminalize weapons only criminals will have weapons. Criminals and the helpful police.
Yep, that's why there's so much gun violence in Britain compared to, say, America. Because we all know that whenever anyone tries to shoot anyone in America, someone else shoots them first. That's why there are so few gun murders in the US and absolutely no horrific massacres of innocent people at schools and cinemas (unlike Britain where that shit happens all the time).
after current events i don't think we should be asking the general public's opinion on anything until things calm down
I REALLY doubt that's representative of the entire population. I don't know anyone who wants guns unbanned.
It's not, it's the Daily Telegraph. Slightly right-wing so naturally a little more likely to support guns (although 80% seems unusually high.)
I've never heard anyone suggest this ever. Even from people who already own firearms here.
Same, never heard a single person with this opinion in my entire life.
