So my PS3 recently did the yellow light of death. I am keeping the hard drive (so I can put it in my new ps3 then back it up onto an external hard drive to copy my save files onto the new, larger hard drive.)
I am interested in taking things apart so what could I do with the components from the ps3?
Paper weights?
Or you could always sell them as spares.
Or you could try to build a PC inside the PS3's case, though that might be a bit difficult, as I'm not sure that you could get any motherboards small enough to fit.
Smash it.

After taking said compontents out.
Nothing to do with anything except maybe the Blu-Ray drive. And I am not even sure if you can do anything with it.
Take the components out, build a small PC inside.
I'll take it of your hands, ive got a pc i could take apart and fling in it.
Whats the yellow light of death?
I'm sure it could be repaired?

pretty sure YLOD is easily fixable
Make a bluray laser.
rip out that expensive blueray drive! or put a new computer in it
I heard you can make a pretty cool laser with the bluray laser.
Insert a foreman grill, mod the case to where the back of the ps3 has hinges to where it opens in an upward fashion, make bacon from the comfort of your own room.
[del]Buy it use it break it[/del] fix it
Trash it change it mail upgrade it
Charge it pawn it zoom it press it
Snap it work it quick erase it
Write it cut it paste it save it
Load it check it quick rewrite it
Plug it play it burn it rip it
Drag and drop it zip unzip it
Lock it fill it call it find it
View it code it jam unlock it
Surf it scroll it pause it click it
Cross it crack it switch update it
Name it rate it tune it print it
Scan it send it fax rename it
Touch it bring it Pay it watch it
Turn it leave it start format it
I heard that thing serves really well as a door stop
A hat
Porn stash
George Foreman grill
Do a 360 and moon walk away
automerge issues
Get it re-balled with proper solder and you'd never get that ylod again.
put xbox 360 internals inside it
or you could explore the insides and hope that the blu ray drive uses standard PC connections (hey if it uses standard laptop drives there's a chance right?)
I always blow up my old appliances with a pound or two of explosives.
[sp]I really do.[/sp]
Sell it on ebay and pretend it works.

PS3 hard drives are encrypted and the contents can only be read by the console that formatted it.

Not if he plus the external hdd into the PS3 via USB.
I mean he can't backup his saves by connecting it to another PS3. Yes, he can still use it, but it'll have to be formatted first.

A PS3 cannot read the HDD of another no matter what, they are protected. You need to use the Backup utility to do this. Which he can't as his PS3 is kinda dead.
Plus some games have copy-restricted savedata for various reasons, which sucks.
Apparently blowing a hairdryer into the back of it while it's wrapped in a towel would get it working long enough to back them up.

take the HDD out before you heat it up.

i agree with this
make a hidden diy ps3 safe and don't tell your parents your ps3 is broken or just hide it in the closet
I fixed a friend yrod by doing the following:
1:Open it up,
2:Get all the dust out
3:remove thermal paste and cooling pads (thick fabric like thingies)
4:Replace with new thermal pads and paste.
5:Screw it back together.
6:Profit.
there are tuttorials online on how to do this.
Use the case of the PS3 and build a small media computer around it.
