I think you can take this a couple ways. At first I took it as "Yea! Fight the power!" Then I took it as Notch being a baby about it. He seemed to make this decision in like 5minutes.
facebook being integrated in the VR would be REALLY STUPID and totally shoehorned and unfitting as hell
I think they overplay this too much (like with WhatsApp and facebook). It's not like they will be able to record your whole life with OR.
Kind of a shame, really. I haven't played Minecraft in god know how long, but having it oculus compatible would have made me dust it off if I ever got one. I feel that refusing to do it at this stage is a bit too preemptive, we don't know the extent of the partnership.

Time will tell where we end up.
i hope notch realises him coming out with this so quickly is going to influence a lot of people away from the oculus rift, and that may cripple it before facebook ever does.
I can honestly see Facebook taking a step back and actually letting the guys at Oculus get on with their job and just give them the money they to perfect it and get it to market, then make their investment back with sales or some other plan they have for it later because they think it's going to take off. A long term, fucking massive $2 billion investment if you will.

Don't tell him he's a baby for doing this, he's keen enough and ahead of most gamer enthusiasts/consumers.

They refused acquisitions in the past that would've forced them to work on anything but their own vision. Again, time will tell. But for now I will trust Oculus on their word.
And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.
well that's an immature knee-jerk reaction if I ever saw one. Edited: Um, Facebook hasn't announced what they're going to do. For all we know they could take a completely hands-off approach, keep the current dev team, and only provide financial support. Which is why freaking out over this is stupid.

We don't even know how much control FB has in the company yet. All we got is an announcement. He says he doesn't want to work with FB or social, but there is no indication that he would have to. It still sounds entirely like he made the decision knee-jerk, then found ways to justify it.
facebook being integrated in the VR would be REALLY STUPID and totally shoehorned and unfitting as hell
But Oculus Rift isn't being integrated with facebook at all though

That one hasn't been touched in nearly half a year, according to the github page.
Guys Facebook probably didn't buy OR to make Facebook VR They bought it because there's money to be made there. Nothing more
Why the hell would Facebook want to acquire Oculus? I guess there are several answers to that but the whole thing just really doesn't sit well with me. It'd be great if we can NOT turn social networking into a requirement of life.
I wouldn't be surprised if come the 2030s, people are considered social outcasts if they don't participate in social networking. So I'd be screwed.

Zuckerberg called out virtual reality as one of the computing platforms of the future -- following desktops and mobile -- and yes, talked about building Facebook's advertising into it. Specifically, he talked about the potential of a virtual communication network, buying virtual goods, and down the line, advertising.
Whatever the case, I'm going to be fucking pissed if they try and use it purely for their gain
those saying notch was lazy is a bit harsh, he invested 10,000$ in the kick starter for them to deliver occulus, and right before they did, Facebook comes along and buys them out? he made it clear in his post, he wanted to work with occulus and he wanted to help out initially in the kick starter, but he was not doing it so they could make 500million from Facebook who frankly overpaid by about 495million, deals like this are bad for the industry, bad for the consumer, and bad for the economy, I'm all for people being successful but its time and time again when Facebook or twitter or Google offers a small company a huge check in exchange for their company and then the company is integrated and destroyed [editline]25th March 2014[/editline] also when has Facebook ever delivered on their hardware promises? they have been working on a smartphone for like 5 years now
Honestly, at least we still have Sony's VR headset. That still remains untouched by social networking platforms.
This, if there's any facebook integration in the final product I'll livestream myself eating a bowl of dewritos cereal.
Quoting this just in case
Guys Facebook probably didn't buy OR to make Facebook VR They bought it because there's money to be made there. Nothing more
This right here. They know how volatile the social network business is, this is nothing more than an attempt to branch out into different markets before they lose control of what got them to where they are. Google is doing the same exact thing by branching out and now they have their hands in a dozen different markets, most of which are fairly profitable. It's all a contingency plan, why just focus on one thing when you're making so much money?
