Hi, I've been looking everywhere for a good story driven singleplayer game like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault or Half Life. Not like Skyrim or Fallout. I don't really care about what genre it is, but i would prefer an FPS, action/adventure/horror will do. But if you know a great third person game, shoot!
If you are interested in older games, the point-and-click adventures of the 90s had outstanding stories. In some cases (Gabriel Knight, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream) the lead designers started out as authors and later had work developed into PC games. Most of the old Lucasarts games fit the bill really well. Monkey Island Loom Grim Fandango You could look into Sierra games like the King's Quest series, but those tend to be a lot less forgiving. If you make a wrong move you can just die and the game ends there. Gotta save often. Also Psychonauts is a good one. Its story has a really similar feel to those old adventure games, but it has more of an emphasis on action and platforming. It's probably really cheap on Steam, and it's a more "modern" option.
Big Rigs Over the Road Racing is the most compelling game I have ever played, just 5 minutes alone ingame can drive me to tears.
Shenmue Shenmue 2 get an emulator for the Dreamcast, because this game is fucking awesome
Call of Duty 2
L.A. Noire
Deus Ex: HR if you're willing to put down a bit of money. If not, the first Deus Ex is also great. Max Payne series is always great. Then there's Metro 2033, which is a good horror-ish FPS.
The half life series
Bioshock Series.
Quake 2/4 Metro 2033
I kept falling of my chair when i played Penumbra, but i could try Amnesia. Metro 2033 seems very tempting too.
Mafia/Mafia 2
Metro 2033 is amazing However, for the last bit, you need a much more powerful rig than you do for the first bit, so I'm stuck at like 98% complete.
I'd say Max Payne or Deus Ex + Human Revolution. Also, Soldier of Fortune 2 was good.
World In Conflict Crysis Metal Gear series
I thought Red Dead Redemption was good.
Far Cry had an interesting story, Jurassic Park The Game wasn't that bad, it pretty much is an interactive story, kinda.
Max Payne I say. Don't mind me, I am not biased at all.
Chalk me up for another Human Revolution, though I loved the first mass effect, third person though.
Mass Effect is amazing. I hear the uncharted series and heavy rain, both for the ps3, are also good story games. I haven't played either of them(yet), but I'd say they're safe bets. From what I've seen/heard, Uncharted is a mix between an action game and an action film. You do a lot of the acts yourself, using your own skills. Things such as stealth and shooting. While Heavy Rain is more of a choose your own adventure interactive movie. I've also heard Heavy Rain has no game over, you cannot fail. Instead of being sent back to a checkpoint, a bad decision will just play into the story.
Episode 3
Borderlands. ...:v:
I'll give another recommendation to Deus Ex, and it's prequel Human Revolution. Engaging plotline, fun and varied gameplay. Wear your tinfoil hat while playing. Mass Effect (get the second while you're at it.) Try other Bioware games, too. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a classic, and it comes fairly cheap on Steam. Dragon Age: Origins is hit or miss, I enjoyed it, but there were parts that frustrated me to no end. In any case, Bioware is good for RPGs with stories that you can really get immersed into. SW:KOTOR and DA:O are third person RPGs with and quirky combat system; not sure if you'd like them. Watch videos of them to get what I mean. Metro 2033 is a tad short and leaves you wanting more, in my opinion (it was still really good. Fairly demanding in hardware, though.) Cool storyline (it's based off of a book,) fun experience, etc. Bioshock 1 and 2 are amazing experiences both gameplay and story-wise. They left me literally shaking in my seat by the end of both. And sometimes, during the games, too. Very touching games. I'd probably say to get these the most. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is great if you have the balls. And if you don't, consider it as your training regimen to grow a pair :v: Basically, everything the guys above me have said.
Silent Hill 2
Max fucking Payne
Assassin's Creed series.
Silent Hill 2
That too.
The Prince of Persia series has interesting story mechanics, plus great gameplay
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has the best story I've ever seen in a video game. But really, Amnesia has an excellent story.
