God damn, waiting on so much music to come out
What's this thread's general thoughts on Phish and jam music as a whole? I've been into them since high school and find it really cool how fanatical the following can be and encyclopedic their knowledge of the differences in live performances, but a lot of the time in musical discussion I see people turn their noses up at Phish.
I really only know about Phish because of Harris Wittels talking about his love of them on podcasts, but haven't ever actually listened to them.
Got a free seven hours for a crash course? I like Phish for the extended jams and variety of genres they play, plus some of their songs are just plain fun. They're much bigger as a live band than as a studio band, if you want to explore them I'd recommend digging around and listening to their big live shows from the mid-90's and past few years, I'd say those are their peak times. They've played Madison Square Garden for New Year's the last few years and I've been wanting to see them there with friends, I'm also probably seeing them in Colorado this August.
I liked this one. Maybe I'll have to give them a more in depth listen.
i like their songwriting but the production on their live performances is what ruins it for me
it just sounds so lifeless and flat, i totally get that it's efficient which they need to be for how much live material they release, but it just sucks out my enjoyment of their music
Little disappointed they are even further away than King Gizzard, but I'm hoping that this get's the ball rolling. Funny, I start listening to Bikini Kill they reunite, I start listening to Stereolab and they reunite.
I'm still not sure about Phish, but I fuck with some Oysterhead.
Have you ever been to a live show or seen the visual aspects of one? Show to show the production can be hit or miss, true, but the playing combined with the lighting is what really sells the shows to me. The whole lighting rig moves and is timed perfectly with the jams (which is remarkable, the lighting person is practically another member of the band given how in tune they are with the playing), and that combined with the audience being the fanatics they are gives so much raw energy to every show that makes them super enjoyable.
i'm specifically talking about the hundreds of live albums they've put out (which is the grand majority of their output)
being at a live performance is very, very different from listening to a live album
Ah yeah, lots of the LivePhish branded albums leave a lot to be desired in their sound. If you want to hear/watch some generally better quality stuff, look for the live streams they've been putting out over the last few years. The camerawork is engaging and the sound is pretty crisp.
More new Murlocs boys
