The Doctor Who Spoilers and Speculation Thread V3 - "Oh, brilliant."

So the new TARDIS is pretty cool, but a bit small for anyone? Or I'm just used to the huge sets of Matt's and Peter's Doctors.
It's a huge set. It just has columns so looks closed in around the console.

John Smith did an amazing job with the title sequence, seems he also used some ideas from one of his older videos .

Out of the loop:
I am aware of the rivalry between NeonV and JohnS, but why the hate on NeonV?
Just curious.
Hmm, yeah I guess that's it.
Also, I love how they didn't show the ceiling, and it seems to up forever.
I love last night's episode! Definitely feels like they're building up to something, but it doesn't feel hamfisted.
While i loved episode, the writing in this episode was very bland and exposition filled. Plus some of it felt like a bad Saturday morning cartoon psa with it's messages.
"Guns are bad! Brains Over Bullets!"
They are just robot guards doctor no need to get that fussy over it
And the ending was really rushed, now that i think about it, this whole episode really felt rushed in a lot of areas to fill the time slot.
Plus the editing was really off in some areas, they would cut away from someone when they we're in one position and it would cut back to them in another spot, it was very strange.
Getting off the negatives, overall it was a enjoyable episode i'm just not gonna remember it as one of the stronger entries in the show. (quick comment on the companions : Ryan and Graham are becoming my two favorites of the bunch, Yaz on the other hand wasn't given much to do in this episode, still a bit so and so on her, hopefully they will let her get some time in the sun in a upcoming episode.)
I present my humble opinion on who I think the timeless child is;
Susan
That #NotMyDoctor boycott though
Doctor Who News
Incredible.
I hope is it, but if this series is supposed to be newbie friendly I'm not sure if it will.
What a bunch of ass hats.
"Guns are bad! They only make things worse!"
Cut to River Song gun-kataing a room full of Silence.
The doctor has been against guns for several seasons now.

The Doctor has been against guns since the beginning, well, at least since The Gunfighters. But in that episode he grumbles at Steven for taking a gun from his privet collection and then later in the episode gets jittery when Doc Holiday offers him a gun. But then... It is The Gunfighters...
I think it was the way the doctor delivered it, it was very preachy and condescending to ryan. If there is one aspect i am not liking about this doctor it's the psa messages Chris is tacking on to this version of the doctor.
I hope the anti-gun speech was a red herring and the final scene of the Christmas Special plays out exactly like this, but with Tim Shaw instead of Rich Evans:

Do keep in mind guys, when the Doctor first met the Sniperbots, they weren't attacking, and the Doctor didn't know they were literally made to kill.
So during the scene with Ryan and the Gun, it's safe to assume that the Doctor thought it was possible to reason with them.
If the Doctor found out they were made to kill and THEN that scene happen, yeah it'd be dumb.
Moffat definately knew how to handle dialogue better.
Can I just say I'm very glad that what Chris Chinchilla said about there being no story arcs being wrong.
I think they're just trying to re-establish the basics of Doctor Who. Which I think is pretty important right now. This season feels like a bit of a soft reboot and a possible starting point for many viewers, it's been that way with every new showrunner. Even Moffat's first ep with Smith was very "I'm the Doctor and this is what the Doctor is and does".
I love the new Tardis. I love the new intro sequence. I love Jodi. I love the new companions.
This is so fucking awesome, the show feels so revitalized and I am so excited about everything
the forum being down almost made me forget to post my biggest criticism of the latest episode:
if they forget to make the sonic screwdriver glow when the doctor is using it one more time I'm gonna blow a gasket
otherwise I actually liked the most recent episode even more than the first - I felt like the dialogue flowed *so much* better than the first week
only thing I disliked was the occasionally odd pacing and also the way the tardis shots were directed was really bad - way too many close ups when it already feels smaller than the other set due to the lack of raised platforms - I wanna see it fully, show it off!
I found the villains of this ep. really underwhelming
There's the host guy, who has no backstory or any motivation, who has the power to set up a team of sniper robots to attack the contestants in a race spanning galaxies, but apparently is weak enough to instantly collapse when the contestants threaten him despite the fact he knows there's no way off that planet and that both the contestant are there because they have no money or power.
There's the contestant guy, who starts off willing to break the rules by shooting the other contestant for a boat, but then makes a complete 180 after being saved once despite his big speech about trusting no one suggesting he'd be a harder nut to crack
The sniper robots are just... well emotionless robots with no dialogue or any real info, mostly there so that the Doctor can kill them without guns.
Then there's the cloth monsters which were nice as surprise enemies but looked straight up goofy when they started talking with a special effect that looked like a kid in a ghost costume.
Thing is most of those can be attributed to pacing issues which we saw in the first episode but felt even worse here because it was 10 minutes shorter and it feels like scenes are missing at some points (a couple of problems arising only to be solved immediately, like the guy contestant not wanting to lose only for him to be convinced to share it moments later off camera, and the ghost monument not being ther- oh wait it is now, never mind)
Contestant guy's arc should have been a lot slower, could have shown him change throughout the episode instead of just suddenly right at the end

New golden age could be here boiz
I liked both of the new episodes, but the second one was noticeably... off. It kind of feels like Graham and Ryan fixing stuff is pointless with the Doctor around, and the "call of duty" scene with Ryan would have been funnier if it was just his vision of what would happen, rather than what actually happened. The villain accepting the male ship captain's threat seemed kind of dumb as well, seeing as he's rich enough to make sure he'll never leave the planet. It's also kind of weird that the Doctor turned a sniperbot into an EMP with seconds, the same with turning a phone into an alien tech tracker in the first episode. I mean, it's not the most outlandish thing the Doctor's done in an instant but it just felt off.
New Tardis looks cool, but IMO it's the weakest of all the nuWho Tardises except the first version of the 50th anniversary one. Custard cream dispenser is brilliant, but it's cramped, way too dark, and they're trying too hard to make it look alien and give Jodie a distinct theme instead of giving her a Tardis that fits her character: bright, cheery, stuff to tinker with. It doesn't even have any seats or doors that could lead off to other parts of the Tardis and that really bothers me.
Despite my complaining, I really like the new season so far. I hated season 7B, 8 and 10 and this feels like a good return to form for the show. Jodie's fantastic and the new cast is great.
