first episode of nu who to have me actively looking away and getting actual body-spasm inducing ick chills. can't imagine how bad people with worse arachnophobia than mine found the episode still enjoyed it though, it's wild how consistently good this series has been so far
I enjoyed that episode quite a bit, Yaz definitely got some much needed exposition and characterization. It did sorta end but tbh it's not nearly as low as the series has gotten before.
This is probably my least liked episode of the new season.
But it was still good, it's no Rosa/TWFTE but it was still fun to watch.
Liked the Character Development Yaz and Graham got, also reminded me of RTD Era Companions.
Got nothing really new to add about the main plot, so I'm just going to say that I really liked them filling out Yaz's background more
Also RIP Yaz's dads cooking
I sympathize with Ryan and Jack. Fuck spiders.
I thought that was a great episode
Not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but I really dislike that the new series is tries to go for some level of scientific accuracy (vinegar warding off spiders) but then bullshitting the reason for there being giant spiders with "toxic waste didn't kill the almost dead spider, it made it stronger!". There's only so many ways you can explain away giant spiders existing, but I think they could have gone with something even a little more convincing.
I mean, they did with the whole genetic testing thing
As an arachnophobic I can say I am now far more familiar with the inside of my eyelids
6.43m last night.
Rosa looks to have consolidated a touch over 8m.
Honestly I never thought we would see the first three episodes over 8m (let alone the 10m and 9m of the first two). I thought those days were gone.
This show will last forever.
Seems like it is starting to even out at around 6m.
Tho obviously basing it off two episodes is dumb but it'd be interesting to see if it does.
Things I didn't like about Arachnids -
The title itself. It just doesn't flow. I get it's supposed to be a play on words and a reference to Anarchy in the UK but it just doesn't come off. Spiders in Sheffield would have been better, and that's shite
I found the grime scene really cringe, like, the sort of "hello fellow kids!" sort of cringe.
I get that this is an ensemble cast and more of an ensemble series of Doctor Who focusing on the four of them instead of having the Doctor be the main character, but I don't like that. I feel like the Doctor doesn't really get to do much, which is a shame because I like Whittaker's socially awkward approach. One of my main criticisms of 13 in her opening episodes was how she was a bit too much like 10, but I think the socially awkward aspect to her works really well in regards to defining her Doctor as an uber geek, rather than 10's dashing hero.
The episode just.. ended? There was no resolution. I think a lot of Chibnall's writing suffers this issue. He doesn't really bother writing resolutions. The classic example is The Power of 3. Was hoping his years of Broadchurch were gonna sure him up and solve this but here we are.
This episode is by far the weakest of the four we've had so far. The Team TARDIS dynamic is really growing on me though. Ryan is the weakest link and I think that's sadly due to Cole's performance, I just don't find it believable like I do with Walsh and Gill.
Hope we get some more Whoniverse stuff soon! I'd like to see another Time Lord or a Time Agent or something like that as the finale villain, if the 'no returning monsters' thing is true.
I love Socially Awkward Doctor, she's fantastic.
Same, I just find myself wishing she had a few more 'serious' moments, like it's a bit unnerving to me how willing the Doctor is to get to know Yaz's family, considering what usually happens to the people who travel with her and their families. Like, 9 and 10 both had this reluctance to get involved in family affairs (9 more than 10) but I suppose that's a RTD era quirk.
13 is really really good though. Different but the same. Chibberz has done well with her.
It's ya boy Segun

Peter went full Pertwee during his tenure -- business in the start, party in the end.
Speaking of Pertwee, I was half expecting last week's episode to at least pay reference to planet of the spiders.
Advance review of the next episode bemoans the lack of threat from the monster. The wait goes on.
This episode is weird and probably my least favourite
That very much felt like a Moffat-era filler episode. OK/10.
Well, at least this week's story had an ending, a fun enough episode for what it was even if it felt a little wonky here and there.
And of course the antagonist survives and just leaves! How else would they have met their end this serise?
I take it all back - bring back the Daleks.
Decent enough episode in the end but the most Chibnall that Chibnall did ever Chibnall and another villain that isn't really a villain. They need to spread those out.
Really looking forward to next week by Vinay Patel.
Didn't like that one to be honest. Bring on the guest writers.
Too much going on, not really fussed about any of it. Non-Earthbound episodes just seem painfully boring and generic this season? I'm up for another historical so looking forward to next week
the main dude who got shot out the airlock and blown up 's acting was atrocious
but yeah this episode kinda sucked. which is a shame, 'cos the design of the ship and some of the other ideas, like the trash galaxy and the android dude were kinda cool, as well as the concept of the doctor being in a situation where her attachment to the tardis was something that could potentially endanger others. but it was just so bland and cookie-cutter it hurt
I actually enjoyed this one more than last weeks, the villain wasn't great but it didn't really feel like it was supposed to be a big threat (like the spiders) - it was more of a "everything on this ship is going wrong, let's try and fix it"
I really enjoyed that episode.
I kind of liked it by virtue of nothing really bad sticking out like the terrible Trump-parody and lack of an ending like in the last episode. I feel like this episode would have been better as a "breather"
episode rather than an early episode.
Kind of bugging me that there's really nothing memorable about this season so far other than 'female Doctor' and some scenes in Rosa. Tim Shaw's faceis the only thing I can remember about any of the villains that stood out, and 13 hasn't had any defining moments about who she is as the Doctor just yet.
I thought the little alien was adorable.
