The Doctor Who Spoilers and Speculation Thread V3 - "Oh, brilliant."

Honestly disappointed that the medic lady did nothing interesting other than dump exposition after the medic guy did the whole speech about trusting and believing in her, could have had an arc about gaining self-confidence in a stressful situation, but no, we needed more time attributed to the pregnant character that was felt like a 30 second bit stretched across 5 minutes and the android who... was there
they should've cut the pilot / pilots brother subplot out and given the flying-the-ship part to the medics instead. lead medic is also the pilot, and the other medic has flown sims but lacks confidence in real world flying or something idk. then the auto pilot has them on a course straight into the asteroids and her moment is flying the ship through and saving everyone on board or whatever.
Idk, I thought last episode was a fun time
thing is, doctor who is one of those shows where even if an episode sucks i still have a nice time watching it for the first time 'cos i enjoy the characters and it's all new and it feels like in that moment anything could happen, not to mention how with the current series the cinematography and music are top tier regardless of the story. like afterwards i go "well that sucked" and i probably won't go back and watch it again, but in the moment, the experience doesn't feel like a waste of time or whatever idk
Jesus the last episode drove people fucking nuts. It got one of the lowest AI scores of the show. The usual tabloids are already shouting crisis. Forums calling for Chibnall to resign. Lowest rated episode on IMDB.
I didn't think it was great but I didn't think it was that offensive.
Finally broke down and started watching the new series.
The whole "squad" is making me really, really enjoy the new series
They're a fam
It's a mediocre episode, but somehow I enjoyed it.
Like it's just bland, it's nowhere near as offensive as:

I'll always see Love and Monsters as, IMO, some of the biggest missed potential. The idea of an episode focusing on the normal people the Doctor has saved? That's cool. It should've been about the people of the group seeking answers, clarification or closure on what happened when they encountered the Doctor and how he saved them. It doesn't help when it becomes a documentary-styled episode.
The episode is pretty good up until the Azorbaloff becomes involved
Which came first; the idea to make it a Doctor-lite story and about those affected by him, or the Azorbaloff winning the Blue Peter contest and needing an episode to star in? One has to wonder how they could've treated the kid's design a better script.
Pretty much this, made it worse that it was peter kay, I just don't find him funny at all
...and again this week.
Peter Kay was supposed to play the main guy in the story.
Hell the whole process buggered from the start; they had a competition on Blue Peter for the viewers to design a monster, they pick one that was to be as large as a double decker bus, something on their budget they were unlikely to really do (I hear they actually started working on a practical effect for it even had some cryptic images of it in production) so it would have been all CGI if it was to be that large but judging by the picture I presume was it's eye (as it resembles the original design) would have been considerably smaller.
At some point in the writing of the episode they decided they were going to make the story lighter and more comical than they usually do and to that end they were going to get Peter Kay to play the lead character in the story, the character was based off one he played in a one off appearance on Coronation Street five years prior; not one he was known for, not one that is particularly memorable.
So, we had one of the most popular comedians in the UK at the time staring in an episode as a character he played once in a show half a decade prior being written for by a writer and a show that isn't really known for their comedy, fighting off against a monster who was going to be redesigned and altered thus defeating the whole point in selecting it in the first place in an episode of Doctor Who without the Doctor in it for the most part.
All that without the shock revelation that Kay wasn't really keen on the character they wanted him to play and being a fan of Doctor Who would have rather played the villain!
Thankfully as far as bad Doctor Who stories go this is one of the least bad, certainty in the modern era. But at least you can ignore it as it isn't really key to the overall fabric of the show or some greater story line or mystery, unlike Twin Dilemma, which is a rant for another time I think...
i watched love and monsters quite recently as i hadnt seen it since it came out and i was like 12 and it seemed like a nostalgia trip. i actually ended up rather enjoying it
Love and Monsters > Fear Her
At least Love and Monsters doesn't write the 10th Doctor as an inconsiderate dick. Kinda.
"I'm coming"
"No"
"I know these forests"
"... okay"
Dat writing
Yeah, I'm not sure about most of this one. But I liked the climax and ending, feels like the episode really picked up around there.
I thought it was fantastic, by far and away better than the past couple weeks and it is between it and Rosa for my favorite story this series.
Plus the whole "Villains not being Villains" thing actually worked this week and made sense with the story. A historical story where in the end the threat isn't bug eyed monsters it is humans from that time period, I can dig it.
I agree with all of this. I was weary going in to it but it played out pretty well.

Not brimming with excitement about Lee Mack And The Space Warehouse so hopefully it will be a belter
yeah I thought the villain thing was ok this time - there *was* a villain it just wasn't who we first expected
that said, as with last week's, once again this would work better if the other episodes had had good villains - let's hope Kerblam! delivers that. personally I'm digging the synopsis for it so fingers crossed.
So far, I’m really liking this episode. Really like we’re literally delving into Yaz’s faniky history.
This one started off weak but got better and better as it became obvious things weren't as simple as they seemed, might be my favourite so far this season
Honestly, I'm super happy with this episode. There's really nothing I actually want to complain about, although this series' weak sides are still present. The setting was absolutely gorgeous and I liked the concept behind the demons,
Nice thread on the music

Nice return to form with this episode.
The unfortunate weak link of this series has been Chris Chibnall, I think
Last night's ep surprisingly rated higher than Attenborough.
I kind of liked Fear Her, mostly just seeing David Tennant carrying the Olympic Torch
