The Doctor Who Spoilers and Speculation Thread V3 - "Oh, brilliant."

Is it just me or has Chris Chibnall got some pact with the British-Indian Actors guild?
I'm only asking this as he seems to put a character who is British Indian in almost every one of his Doctor Who Episodes, which seem to be the only ones that feature them (other than The God Complex, I think)

Episode 1: The Woman Who Fell to Earth
"We don't get aliens in Sheffield."
In a South Yorkshire city, Ryan Sinclair, Yasmin Khan and Graham O'Brien are about to have their lives
changed forever, as a mysterious woman, unable to remember her own name, falls from the night sky.
Can they believe a word she says? And can she help solve the strange events taking place across the city?
Episode 2: The Ghost Monument
Still reeling from their first encounter, can the doctor and her new friends
stay alive long enough, in a hostile alien environment, to solve the mystery
of desolation? And just who are Angstrom and Epzo?
I would say there's something off about that picture, but it seems that every recent series photo has been a little weird.

Holy shit
Finally, Doctor Who looks and feels modern again. I'm loving everything I see, it's a complete back to the drawing board moment. This series needs to feel like a fresh start. Like 2005 all over again.
I know some fans are giving it shit but I'm loving the use of pop music in the promo stuff. It's modern. It's going to appeal to the target audience. And it's a fucking trailer. I hope this is a sign the bombastic orchestral music is behind us. That was such a 00's thing and as good as a lot of it was, it was tired and cheesy. Looking forward to hear what Segun Akinola is bringing to the party. I imagine something more electronic and atmospheric.
Can I also take a chance to appreciate the new cinematography. The cameras are gorgeous. It's got a real filmic look to it that Moffat often strived for but never quite perfected. The Angels 2-parter Matt Smith did is probably as close as he came to that.
I feel like it's a new show again. Moffat-Who became a tick list of what Doctor Who should be, to the point it was embarrassing. Which was weird because when he took over it was all new and different. Then suddenly it's 2016 and men in rubber suits is really the most creative we can be? Everything was a reference to the past, sometimes even critical of it. It was really the most fan-wanky the show had ever been. Which is a real shame because the talent behind and in front of the camera was exceptional. Moffat is a fantastic writer. Capaldi is an almighty screen presence. It's like nobody was being guided properly. Or Moffat was too tired to show-run so just did what was easy and familiar. Now I hear the Daleks won't even appear as there's a 'no old monsters' rule? Great. I hope it's to hell with Monsters-Of-The-Week format too.
Oh, I can't wait. I really can't. Capaldi-era was such a fantastic bookend to Nu-Who. I feel like this is a new third-era of Who. Post-Who. I dunno what we'll call it. It might all by hyperbole and it two weeks we'll be standing around trying to figure out which mystery character a guest actor is playing this series arc ("IS IT THE RANI"). But I don't know, it feels different this time.
Agree with everything. People on r/gallifrey are complaining about the music, and apparently for the Australian market they've done an official version of the trailer with more "normal" music: https://www.facebook.com/ABCTV/videos/480106912488990/
Everyone on reddit is saying this is what the trailer should have used but I think it's so boring. Just dramatictrailermusic.mp3 like someone went "hmm what's the most obvious thing we can do here"
I'm calling it now:
Graham O'Brien is going to be a source of wisdom
Ryan Sinclair offers street smarts
Yasmin Khan gives technical smarts
It's a very obvious and cliche attributions to characters, but I have a feeling it's what they're going to do.
Guys guys!
She said the thing!

Apparently the time of the BBC America simulcast means it will be broadcast at 7pm in the UK. Whether that's the permanent slot after the extended opener remains to be seen.

This is what reading this post (and remembering chunk after chunk of Matt Smith's tenure) is like. No offense-- I wholly agree with you.
LOUDNESS WARNING
So Sundays will be:
6 - Countryfile
7 - Doctor Who
8 - Strictly
Is that the implication? Makes sense.. but I thought Antique Roadshow still has an episode of the series left..
Just finished watching every first Doctor episode and I gotta say, having the Companions come and go as often as they do, is such a nice change of pace.
I kinda want this to happen again, or at the very least, have the Doctor nurture his companions, to make them better than when they first met.
Like Vicki, Vicki at the start was just another "Susan" to an extent, but over the adventures, she grew as a Character and eventually outgrew her "Susan" like personality.
Same with Steven, he was very...immature for a lack of a better word, but over the course of the episodes, he slowly grew into a fantastic character, and left to become a Representative for a Tribe of people in The Savages.
They all grew, and it was just really nice seeing them grow up in their personality, and move on.
We don't really get characters like that anymore, Rose and Martha was like that, Donna too until she forgot everything about the Doctor.
The only character who really had a good development was Rory, who went from being a bit of a wuss, to being in control in a lot of instances, growing out of his shell.

Oh fuck, how am I gonna last these next 11 days
For anyone around who cares, the review embargo on Episode 1 lifts in 32 minutes.
"Chibnall's new direction keeps things grounded and almost gritty"
Finally, I missed it when Moffat took over.
Funnily enough, that's kind of what I thought about Season 5.
These reviews are good but they've sorta confirmed every fear I had about the New Series. I was alright with Chibnall wanting s11 to be a fresh start, but I didn't want him to ignore the show's past totally, which it seems like he has done from the reviews. I was also worried about 13 being too similar to Tennant, which a lot of the reviews have said she's like. Some are also saying she's annoyingly childlike, which I hope is just a post-regen thing.
What do you mean by this?
Honestly with like 55 years of lore/backstory I am totally fine with them soft rebooting Doctor Who every now and again, means you can try out new themes, stories and directions without having to worry how it's going to fit into a cluttered universe
To be the Devil's Avocado, Moffat also did the same thing.
I remember when S5 was "S1" in a lot of Advertisements.
Plus a lot of RTD introduced stuff did change in Moffat's era, just like in RTD's era with how it changed stuff from Classic.
Don't forget that the Time War existed so new people didn't have to watch the previous seasons to understand the Daleks, since they were pretty much getting reintroduced during RTD's era.
Same with the Cybermen, instead of them being the Classic Mondas ones, they are the Pete's World Cybermen.
Moffat brought back the classic Mondas Cybermen and merged Pete's World with it.
It seems every Showrunner has their own little "reboot".
Plus I am probably literal in this aspect but I am sure if Chris did ignore the past, then chances are people will be upset.
They have to do it, tbh. Even "The Pilot" was advertised as "hey, jump on here" and got 4.64m viewers on the night.
Bring back the history later. The show needs to be appear properly new and inviting right now. The "new Doctor" bump needs to be more than just a bump this series.
I think you have to ignore the past and slowly bring it back in for now. It won't be gone forever, just for a little bit (which I think is fine).
Remember the leaked clip of episode one? They've officially released it, now in non-dogshit quality
