I wish there were less adbreaks.
I wish here was an intro lol
Jesus christ I can't believe they straight up killed a companion.
That's a biggie spoiler, fair warning.
I see what the critics meant about her being TOO fizzy, not enough drama. It's a breath of fresh air after the Moffat era but I hope she isn't like that all of the time, they need to show her dark side a bit more.
But that was quality.
I liked it (of course, how could I not) but I won't lie that I'm missing Moffat's dialogue a little (but I also understand that I'm probably in the minority there)
I felt like her "I am the Doctor" moments weren't as strong as the previous four and I'm missing the lushness of the music a bit (I felt like when the singing was going on in the "I'm just a traveller" scene they could have so easily played a variation of the Doctor Forever theme and it would have fit easily)
But overall pretty solid and I'm sure it will make people that wanted something properly new happy (and it makes me happy too) - I thought Bradley Walsh was the standout of the companions and when Jodie was playing the more subtle parts she really excelled, more of that please
There was a notable reluctance to reference stuff from the shows past. Like, how hard would it have been for her to namedrop Artron Energy after she explained she could track the TARDIS through the energy it gives off? I think that's going to stick out like a sore thumb for people like us who know the show through and through as the series goes on.
But I love love LOVE how the end of ep 1 leads into ep 2 and they seem to be doing a running plot thing through the companions rather than having a story arc. Really can't wait to see where they take this series.
Oh and the new theme is great. I agree with Freeze, the music was a little lacking but when I thought about it during the episode, that's just because we're just to Gold's booming themes constantly playing throughout episodes. This is a new era. You can SEE they're turning the show into a modern drama for 2018 in the cinematography and I think the minimalist score is fitting for that.
The only real criticism I have is that the Doctors dialogue seemed a bit forced at times, like Chibbers is trying too hard to write fitting dialogue for her. We'll see how that evolves throughout the series and how she as a character evolves too.
The future is very fucking bright. Honestly that was the best episode in years. So glad the companions are just normal people who have just been thrust into the Doctors world again.
I liked it. Jodie is great and I think she'll do a great job. Companions seem good too, but I hope the younger ones get a bit more development as they seem rather simple right now. Walsh was fantastic. I do feel that they're trying to distance themselves from the existing Whoniverse a bit too much. I hope they start reconnecting as the series goes on, but going off the preview it seems to only be new stuff for this season.
I think the minimalist score is definitely fitting but I feel like the reluctance to reference literally anything musically (other than the theme) is going a step too far the other way I guess
And weirdly that's kind of a problem with the entire episode, like you said - it's ok to have the odd reference here and there, entanglement with the past might turn new viewers off with episodes like Deep Breath but done right it can just show signs of a deeper connected universe (like how in 2005 they opened with the Autons of all things, but did it in such a way so it didn't matter if you knew it was a reference or not and if you did it was nice)
I do agree with the love of the lead in to episode 2 too - it's why stuff like the ending to Oxygen was so good, I love a good cliffhanger even if we know it will get resolved pretty easily
TIM SHAW
That was very refreshing.
That was a great episode! I’m excited for the next, just felt weird without the title or even credits. Didn’t think it was over yet
there were credits my dude
at least in the us it went to some aftershow thing right after the teleport
The new "vortex" - while intentionally blurred out, I assume, looked like an interesting modernization of the original titles.
Willing to bet The Doctor intentionally brought the gang along in her attempt to “fix” them after she believes her visit is what broke them.
really glad to see an end to over-past references and to see the show have a heart again. Really nice change. Feels like a party we’re all invited to, which was the best bit of RTD Who. Dialogue doesn’t feel completely natural, was clunky for the most part. But when it got into a flow it was great.
Enjoyed it lots. People are quick to compare her to 10/11 but I see way more shades of 4. It’s the child-like enthusiasm. Every Doctor since 7 always had a darker side to them that boiled out in tension. 13, like 4, is just having fun and helping people on the way.
The character writing here is the best I feel we’ve had since Series 5. I hope the stories blossom too.
Surprising nobody, Doctor Who is the #1 twitter trend worldwide.
Why did they take the train when they have a car?
That was amazing and I loved every second. It really feels like a completely different show now, the cinematography and casting was just top notch overall, great visuals and good story. No real complaints from me, to be honest - exceptI noticed the focus was off on a couple of places, like, badly off. Just me?
Also why is everybody so reluctant that there would be aliens? I feel like by this point alien life would just be common knowledge in the Whoverse.
because nothing happens in sheffield
like
nothing.
The best part is he's actually given that name in the credits.
I kinda like the idea of the Doctor forging their sonic screwdriver themselves this time around.
^ don't want this quote but can't delete it on mobile
Imagine if they'd pulled a switcheroo by having Grace feature heavily in all the promo material alongaide the other three
I liked everything about that, really enjoyable first introduction.
Tbh I was expecting her to get killed off because I couldn't see any way for the others to become the main companions - as made clear by the promo - without her dying. It's not like she'd just have been left behind.
Just got done watching the first episode.
Lovely episode and a solid step back in the right direction for this show. Really felt like i was watching classic dr who at some points, alright i'm gonna list off the pros and cons.
PROS
Jodie's Doctor is a fresh of breath air from the bleak doctors before, now don't get me wrong they we're all lovely but it's nice to see we are getting a more optimistic/cheerful doctor this time around, it's gonna be interesting to see where they take her character over the course of her run.
The Companions we're great, grounded and very layered for their first episode in, i really enjoyed that they took the time to introduce them first instead of slinging us into it with the doctor again. Graham was probably my favorite of the three, can't wait to see how his character progresses in this season along with the other two. These three really took me back to the classic days of DW, can't state that enough.
Really love the new cinematic style Chris has applied to the show, and i can only imagine it's gonna evolve and get better as his run as showrunner continues
"Eat my Salad!" I don't know why, but that scene was a gut buster of a scene, i think it was the delivery from the actor that got me. What a strange scene overall.
i love that they are keeping us in the dark on the new intros and tardis for this new era. Here's hoping the wait will be worth it when they reach that point.
the cliffhanger at the end was wonderful, reminded me of classic DW once again. Plus it was just downright awe inspiring to look at from a cinematic standpoint.
CONS
I think the pacing should've been dialed back just a tad, while the episode was fun, it would've helped to have put the breaks in some places.
In short : A good step in the right direction, here's hoping they keep the tardis on the right course and not veer off the beaten path for the rest of the season.
fuck that was good
Know what's going to be the biggest thing left behind in the old series? The whole Last Great Time War thing. From 9-12 that was one of the biggest linking plot-threads even if it was mostly petering out by Capaldi's time. It was mostly between Missy and 12 was it mentioned. Now I'm not sure we'll ever hear the phrase again.
"I reformatted your phone!"
"No! All my stuff's on there!"
"Not anymoooore!"
I just love the way she delivered that line.

8.2m (40.1% share).
Excluding specials, that's the highest overnight rating since Journey's End - 10 years ago.
Alright, watched it again with my family, and I gotta say....there was pretty much no plotholes, and it was even better watching it a second time.
I love the music, I love how it feels like old doctor who with thecliffhanger ending, family in the Tardis, accidentally taking the companion and more importantly, the writing, felt like old Who, I mean classic who.
They actually explained and asked questions, there was development, it felt like I was watching Doctor Who again.
I actually don't feel guilty anymore of liking the show, and I am excited to watch it.
God damn I just really enjoyed the ep.
