Star Trek Megathread v3 - Discovery Makes Our Threat Ganglia Go Crazy

The only problem I can see is that modern trek writers really don't quite understand what Section 31 is, the Section 31 for instance in Discovery is more like the Kelvin Section 31 than it is the DS9 (or even Enterprise) one.
Section 31 in DS9 is officially non-existent, we don't know its status 110 years before.
My theory is that they have a Public facing front (the one with the badges), and then their super secret department that does all the super secret evil 'for the greater good' stuff that Starfleet and the Federation Council doesn't know about.
I think Burnham and Co. will expose S31's hypocrisy and they'll be forced underground.
And Section 31 was secret in the Kelvin Timeline, Spock and Kirk clearly never heard of it before Marcus told them about it.
Short Treks are now on Netflix for non-USA/CAN viewers
My Cable box is saying episode 1 is running for 80 minutes, that includes commercials so it's a longer episode.
Just finished "Brother." I'm still bugged by some things, but it feels like the show is coming from a much better place than season one.
I agree. It's a bit weird not to have stardates every episode.
God damn that was even better than Season 1.
In my opinion, that's not saying much.
However I will agree that was overall a pretty good episode.
I’ve been seeing people who disliked season 1 saying they loved this episode
It was a really good character drama and space adventure. I'm hoping for at least one morality play this season, but at least there's a sense of adventure.
Not looking forward to Spock in a mental institution, that seems too cliche.
i disliked season 1 and loved this episode.
Star Trek Discovery, guest starring Star Trek TOS.
Not really
Compared to the Season 1 opening it was massive improvement.
My gripe with the noisy cinematography still remains though, often times I can't tell what is actually going on like in the asteroid field.
that will be fixed on the Bluray release, may be actually fine in the canadian broadcast and Netflix. CBS All Access has their bitrate set too low, and it kind of fucks with busy scenes.
my favourite part was the engineer who fixed the people. was really clever and fun, hope the show has more stuff like that
Bravo, Discovery! You finally made a damn episode of Star Trek, and it was good.
I love Pike’s ready room
That felt like a very classic TOS episode, mixed with modern TV story telling.
Star Trek is back, and its a good feeling.
For the Americans and Canadians out there, the first episode of Season 2 is free to view, legally

so has the Tilly character been Flanderised after 15 episodes or am I just forgetting how she was in season 1?
I think there's plot reasons.
To a degree they've probably been leaning into making her humorous. I think they toned it down from the first episode, which may have been necessary to reintroduce the characters and their traits.
I give Ep 3 a seven or eight, really can’t decide.
It's the weakest of the season so far to me, I'd say probably a five or six - the pacing needs to slow down by a lot; cramming in 3 plotlines to a 45-minute episode made everything way too breakneck in speed. I wish CBS could stretch the episodes out some more to give everything time to breathe, but it seems like they want to keep everything generally within TV length for markets where they show it on cable.
I did really like the TOS-style Section 31 ship, though. Managed to cleanly the aesthetics of Discovery's squared-nacelle and sleek designs, S31's edgy dark-coloring and a general TOS ship shape philosophy. I think overall they're making the right moves in terms of new ship designs this season, the Hiawatha looked very Trek too.
This is one of my biggest problems with the show in general, there's no silent moments, no breathers, no 'captain stares longingly out of the window at the stars as they ponder the morality of their decision', no pauses at all.
its running at constant warp with DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN rapid orchestral scores and it feels like the show is rushing itself along.
Yeah, episode 3 returned all the bad habits season 1 had. At a guess, this episode also served as a backdoor pilot for the Section 31 series. We may get an episode or two more like this in season 2, as influence of Harberts and Berg takes it time to wane away, hopefully more of the season is along the lines of the first two episodes.
i think episode 2 clearly demonstrated that they're moving in the right direction, but they can't just abandon everything from season 1, there were a lot of good ideas in season 1 that maybe weren't executed perfectly and i think they've got a good opportunity now to improve on those things while also transitioning the show towards something closer to classic trek
