having dany lose jorah, one of her two remaining dragons AND missandei in the span of basically one episode was definitely an overkill
The way they did the godswood scene where Jon reveals his parentage to the others kinda bugs me. Why would they cut away from such an emotional scene where the Stark kids realize their bastard brother is a half-Stark, half-Targ and vindicating their dad's greatest dishonor. The showrunners could've create more similarities to Ned by showing Jon making his cousins swear on the old gods/family to not reveal his identity to the world, forcing the heart of Sansa to be more in conflict with itself when she wants to be an asshole. Instead they just swear they won't tell anything like some school children. It is fine as it is I guess, but they could've made that scene more powerful with only an extra minute.
They are going to ruin the series with just this final season aren’t they? I’m genuinely scared to watch the next episodes. I really hope I’m wrong.
Ofcourse the surroundings are now lacking all the farms, forests, countryside and the part of the city which have grown outside the walls. Now that lush countryside turned into barren desert. Did they chop all the treesa nd razed the homes for firewood, for upcoming winter? Did that desert even have a road, because huge capital cities for sure need massive and expensive gates leading to desert... So now we're just getting another boring "epic" battle in flat ground. More guerrilla styled urban/semi-urban siege would be more interesting.
I find it funny how everyone on the internet (including me) seems really pissed off about the overal quality of this season, but the people I watch this series with every week (my roommates) still think it's the best series ever. (Because the battle of Winterfell was so epic! And all our favourite characters are still alive and they're going to kick the villains' ass!!). My guess is this is because the online forums I visit (Facepunch and Reddit) are frequented by people who either have a taste for 'hard' fantasy in general, or watch 'quality' series (Stuff like Boardwalk Empire/Breaking Bad rather than Friends). People who may be more critical of GoT going down the shitter. Also, I'm fairly certain the mainsteam audience still loves the new season. I mean, S8_3 has a 8.4 on IMDB.
I was actually enjoying this season more than the previous up until this last episode.
I doubt the mainstream audience will like the ending, casuals don't like tragic endings in general.
Can anyone source that HBO and GRRM wanted more episodes, but DnD wanted to end it here?
In the books they're extremely important. The wolves represent protection bestowed by the Old Gods (often speculated that the Three Eyed Raven arranged their finding the pups) Sansa's wolf Lady dying represents the death of her innocence and aspirations to become a Lady in the naive way she started the series with (and leaves her vulnerable to those who would abuse her) Rickon is wild with Shaggy on a cannibal island Robb senses his direwolf Greywind's thoughts and uses its instincts to win major battles against Tywin. It's when he stops trusting his direwolf thoughts that he starts fucking up, such as not heeding it growling at his wife (a plant of Tywin's to try and cause the Red Wedding) and the Freys. Bran's direwolf Summer dies at the start of Winter, but besides that is the tool through which Bran learns his warging powers. Long before he meets the Three Eyed Raven, he's constantly ranging around as a wolf through the North. But JON'S GHOST Ghost is by far the most important direwolf in the whole series. If indeed Jon comes back to life in the next book, it will be because of his Ghost, not simply hand-waving by Melisandre. Ghost is literally half of his character; Jon feels incomplete when he's not around. Jon struggles with fearing his connection to Ghost (but eventually embraces it), possessing Ghost nightly in his dreams. He understands that he's a Warg, which is very important to his character and his fellow members of the Night's Watch. Embracing the feelings and thoughts he senses from Ghost is what makes Jon who he is. It's why he rejects Stannis' offer to legitimize Jon as the Lord of Winterfell. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/108633/8d4a4f69-1b3e-4bbd-94a7-463f76b3fa14/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/108633/e6d9ace2-c1db-4ad2-824d-e4583494490e/image.png
Yeah, if the leaks turn out to be true, I don't think the ending will be that bad. The mainstream audience is going to hate it because most fan favourite characters are going to die. It won't be a mindbending, unexpected plottwist like the endings of earlier seasons, but it might be tragic enough to do it for me.
For what it's worth anecdotally speaking, I'm otherwise not into "fantasy" fiction and I'd comfortably call myself a normie. I was legit okay with Seasons 6 and 7 (which I read other people shat on) and forgave the rushed pacing/teleportation, because honestly, how do you wrap up such a labyrinthine story in 13 remaining episodes. A lot of the stuff people hated, such as "bad pussy", "Beyond The Wall", Littlefinger's death, etc didn't phase me until I saw later discussion around those points. Even in that context, 803 killed the show for me as it goes against the tenants of the show. This isn't me speaking from a place of cultured taste and appreciation - I just legitimately thought the episode was that awful. What I've read from the leaks indicate that future episodes will also crap the bed.
Damn, I'd literally gorge myself on those books if I didn't know that George R. R. Martin will never, ever finish them, unfortunately
i saw these kind of comments thrown around so much in the past two weeks and, personally, i think they are really tunnel-visioned from watching a bunch of live reaction videos on youtube . yes, starks are definitely a fan favourite of the masses but, make no mistake, the night king was also hyped up by a LOT of people battle of winterfell proved to be a controversial episode both online and "offline", in my experience
I feel awful for the artists who have to work to represent such a failure of material. A major part of what kept me watching this show is all of the brilliant work of the cast and crew. It's a shame they have to represent such a downfall of material the upper management created. I read and loved the books because the show lead me to them. I don't care if the remaining books get released or not as I found such meaty material in them. There's such a wide scope in terms of characters and story. It's a shame the show narrowed so much after the fourth season since I found much of the strongest work to be in AFFC and ADWD.
While this season is getting on my nerves overall I gotta point out that Euron's ambush wasn't unreasonable at all. Dragonstone is not far from King's Landing at all, it might even be visible from the Red Keep.
Frankly I think they're worth reading regardless of the status of the remaining books.
Those scorpion balistas are fucking railguns. They can easily shoot the 100-200 meters needed
I don't think it has anything to do with casual vs. hardcore, it's just that writing a good tragic ending is very, very hard to pull off and leave the viewers feeling like they haven't wasted their time. I certainly don't think we're going to get a bittersweet LOTR style denoument here like I thought we would.
None of my friends liked this season at all. Most of them don't give a fuck about what the internet says and I don't think any of them even read any books, let alone something like ASOIF. They are the most casual fans you could hope for. And they are disappointed beyond measure.
Scouting ships? Crow's nest lookouts? Daenerys, Drogon, and Rhaegal flying hundreds of feet in the air? The dragons are what bugs me the most about it. The bolts came from the left, and it was a clear, sunny day. How did zero of the three of them up in the air fail to spot a fleet of dozens of warships (painted black with huge black and red sails) who already had a clear line of sight to them?? They make Euron pull this shit off as if he has a giant cloaking device for his whole fleet, and it's really hard to believe it when he somehow surprises the main characters again and again with one of the biggest fleets in the world.
This season feels rushed. When I heard there was only 6 episodes to resolve both the NK and Cercei I assumed that their fates were going to be somewhat intertwined and resolved together in an interesting way, but seeing as they decided to go the route of "just kill the NK then just kill Cercei" it really wasn't enough. Should have been 10 episodes at least if not 1 season per. Also I feel that the NK should have been the final boss. Wasn't it kind of a big point of the story that mankinds bickering amongst itself was distracting from the "real threat"? I thought Cerceis betrayal/selfishness would lead to her downfall but apparently not and the NK was kind of an idiot bitch anyway.
I think you'll find they shoot at the speed and distance of plot.
What's really frustrating for me is that I'm pretty alright with most of the plot decisions they've been making, but it's just so badly written and poorly executed. You would think they would put more care and attention at the final leg of the show. Just so disappointing.
https://i.redd.it/mlzrmw4ptmw21.png Saw this on r/freefolk. Man, it's depressing how much the writing is being phoned in.
What are some good fantasy book series to read so I can wipe this show's finale from my mind? Anybody have good recommendations?
Oh yeah, totally. I meant geographically it wasn't unreasonable (the complaints I had seen were mostly "how Euron teleport???"). I fucking hated it in practice, these ambushes are always so predictable. Nevermind that Rhaegal just narrowly survived what I thought was sure to kill him only to be triumphantly reintroduced and then killed again in the same episode.

Also I don't like them arbitrarily shitting on characters. GoT is supposed to be brutal but systematic and reasoned and everyone who's died these past few episodes feels like they died for literally nothing. Also also dunking the past, what, 7 seasons of character development for Jaime for no fuckin reason?
Kind of where I'm at, to be honest. I still think this is my favorite fantasy show of all time, but I can't deny that I like seasons 1 - 5 much more than 6 - 8 so far. It hasn't become so terrible that I'd call it outright garbage, though. It would have to meet Mass Effect 3 or, for novel readers, Fate of the Tearling levels of fuckup to make me think differently about the show as a whole. I want to read the books, but I fear that GRRM's unstructured organic style might have fucked him for making a cohesive ending. I fear that the fast pacing in the end of the show is only going to be worse in the books by the sheer larger scope of plot he has to tie up. That's if he sticks to just two more books. And if he needs more, I sure hope he has the time. Dude is 70 and if I may be rude, doesn't look to be leading the healthiest lifestyle. He needs to stop writing side stories if he wants to finish the main series. Or, he dies, and someone like D&D finish the novels too. Boy howdy, I can only imagine the community response. Everyone would hold George's hypothetical head-canon ending supreme forever. On a more positive note, I hope GoT inspires other large political fantasy productions. It's my favorite right now, but I'm always up for more. Unfortunately what competition I've seen doesn't even measure up to season 6 - 8. If anyone has political fantasy show recommendations, I for one would love to hear them.
‘Game of Thrones’ Author Didn’t Want Show to End Martin has said the same throughout the years in various interviews and sitdowns too.
