His outbursts in court were real.
That was one of the few parts of the court scene that was real it seems.
He wasn't evil, and I don't think anyone should think he was. The creator discusses it in the podcast, and really, Dyatlov was a stubborn man. He was just difficult. He wasn't evil. He didn't know there were dangers, and didn't recognize the errors because he didn't have the knowledge to. However he was responsible in some ways for being as pushy, and nonreactive as he was. Failing to see anything that was going on with the test and pushing on was a symptom of him being a stubborn man. Him not believing the reactor exploded was him being stubborn. His choice to go to his death still repeating the same story that he wasn't in anyway responsible or that anyone would do as he did, was him being stubborn, not evil.
He was a bit of an asshole, but hardly a villain.
Just out of curiosity, how much radiation did the two techs that looked directly into the exposed reactor core get?
About a face full of rads.
Just finished ep5. Couldn't help but cry upon finding out Lyudmilla ended up having a child after all the shit she went through. I hope that this series gets a loaded blu ray release with all sorts of cut content, extended footage, and bonus stuff.

No way to know now long they actually staid in that room, but the shots of them looking at the core last 20s. That would about 2 Sv just from that, probably more, enough to be lethal. About a minute at 300 Sv/h is lethal regardless of treatement.
For reference, the max anyone got exposed to at Fukushima is 400 mSv/h.
To put it into the show's units, that's 30000 REM or very roughly ~33000 Rontgen.
God this scene still gets me

RE: Dyatlov being a villain - What's interesting is the Discovery documentary about Chernobyl portrayed him very similarly as far as his outbursts and overall callousness. Even the events of him threatening Toptinov's job and rejecting Akimov's request to record the order to raise power. I wouldn't be surprised if this picture of Dyatlov was built from the testimony of the other control room operators.

Even in his final interview he's either shifting blame completely to the reactor design or describing events that really don't add up. He's acting like they performed the test exactly by the book when we know from testimony how badly botched the whole test was.
