I just watched the first two episodes after years of seeing the memes everywhere.
Why the fuck are they so swole? Also I got a hard on when Roundabout started playing. These guys got good taste in music.
believe it or not, the anime toned down the hugeness. In the manga they looked like this:

of all the things Araki introduced once and never used again, Speedwagon's razor hat is still the one I'm the most annoyed about

while the topic of 'which is the best part' is a topic of hot debate, I believe the general consensus is that the advent of stands makes the series get better and better
while the stands of Part 3 aren't exceptionally complex (since it was Araki's time for trying new things), you're in for a ride once Part 4 kicks up
Over time I've actually started preferring Part 1 to 2, and I have no clue why.
Part 4 is still probably my favorite though, as I'm working on 6 right now.
part 1 feels a little dated and generic to me now. its still a fun ride, but doesnt even come close to part 2 onwards.
but yeah part 4 is god tier
It's odd, it's very specific for me.
In my opinion, if we're talking Part 1 v 2, I'd have to say,
Anime: I prefer Part 1
Manga: I prefer Part 2
My favorite part so far in the series is still Stardust Crusaders. The introduction of stands and the Road Trip feel to it definitely makes it one of the best parts. The villains are interesting too with each one of them relying in a different gimmick to defeat the protagonists.
Part 4 had that too but I like what Araki did with the whole Egyptian themed stands. Specially GEB,Anubis and Bastet.
As I reread Stardust Crusaders (I'm buying the hardcovers as they come out, so it's slow going) I'm really reminded of how much I enjoyed it the first time around. It's still pretty rough (you can tell Araki hadn't quite nailed down how Stands work) but there's such a great balance of action and humor, plus the "road trip" style of storytelling keeps things moving and engaging.

One other thing I realized... the hardcover has Hol Horse on the cover, and there's a brief writeup on his character from Araki. In it, he compares Emperor to Mista's stand and Hol Horse's appearance to Gyro. It made me think - neither part 5 or 7 have had an official release of any sort in America (unless you count their appearances in the video games), and at this rate likely won't be released for years.
I wonder if a casual fan who's just been reading the books saw that and was really confused about hearing that there's a part 7 while 3 is still being published.
I also wonder if there's anybody out there who just discovered the Jojo reprints and that's their only exposure to them. No knowledge of an anime, the games, the last like 30 years of Jojo would be kind of unknown to them.
I'm currently watching the beginning of part 2 and I'm hoping that later this summer I can manage to catch up to part 4
:snip:

At this point, I think it would be really hard for somebody to be in that state unless they basically do not use the internet at all.
I was about as close to that as possible. I just started reading jojo about a year ago because I noticed that the bookstore had these hardcover copies.
But it's impossible not to have SOME knowledge of it beforehand. The internet was pretty crazy for the Capcom fighting game, so I knew there was a character called Dio, and a character called Jojo, and one of them could stop time and throw knives at people and he also liked to drop steamrollers on people and go WRYYYYYY. Also had a vague understanding of stands. But I was still pretty unaware of the anime until near the end of part 3, I guess because there was more hype all over the internet again. About all I had seen of it was the clip of Kakyoin with the cherry.
So it was a little lame to know ahead of time that [sp]Dio wasn't TOTALLY dead at the end of part 1[/sp]
But there were still some major facts I didn't know, like [sp]Each part having a different Jojo. There was a moment when I glanced at a manga volume of part 3 while still reading part 1 and I thought "Man, Jonathan looks really weird later in the series." Also assumed there must be some kind of time travel plot since part 3 looked like it took place in modern times, but Jonathan was still so young.[/sp] :v:

Before watching i honestly thought the show started to take place in space after part 2. I asked my friends, "so how far in the future does part 3 have to skip, if they're the Stardust Crusaders?"
Hol Horse' placement in SC is so bizarre, and even among a lot of dumb stand battles, how he's defeated still makes zero sense.

I'll never get over the fact that Hol Horse could've been part of the main gang instead of Avdol, but Araki got so many complaints about Avdol being gone that he added him back in. Although that did give us Avdol's best fight and the Hol Horse/Boingo combi, so I guess it isn't all bad.

I believe there was also the fact that he could not figure out how to use him to not easily beat the later stand users, and his personality was basically American Polnareff. It would be an interesting ending if he did join
