There are references and cameos of characters, but you could read it on your own. 5 and 6 are still worth reading anyways.

I always figure it out when its explained to me but I later forget how it works.

You also have to remember that the first translations of Vento Aureo was pretty shit which made the power kind of confusing

king crimson's ability is easy to understand, but the specifics of it not so much considering it's inconsistency and araki's week-by-week writing

Purple haze feedback was really good, especially if you are a fan of part 5. It goes into detail about the characters backgrounds but it also has ties to parts 2, 4, and 7(?) That were surprising to me.

I really liked part 5, the ending is a bit off putting, but overall it's Stardust Crusaders with more interesting stands and events. Also maybe it's because i live in Rome, but it was amusing to recognize all the places the gang travels through, like Termini which is the main train station hub (and reading the manga in Italian feels way more fitting than reading it in any other language)
