a lot of the reviews make it sound pretty crap tbh
Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. Personally, from what I've read from not just the reviews, but the community at TFW2005, it was great.
from what i gather its going to be similar to the others; boring characters and plot sandwiched between several decent action sequences. that was always my problem with the "you go to transformers to see robots fuck shit up" excuse: in order to see robots fuck shit up i have to sit through hours of boring crap. now theyve gone and made the film even longer, i dunno if ill be checking this one out as much as i wanna see grimlock in action

Which boring characters are you talking about? Everyone did a fine job, with the lowest being Jack Reynor, but even he still did an okay job. Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammar were also apparently really good too.

i dunno
if it's more robots blowing shit up than it is nonsensical human plot i'm fine with it being almost 3 hours
especially if this shit paves the way for unicron.

Considering the presence of [sp]Quintessons[/sp] I'm fairly sure we'll be seeing Unicron in the 5th film.

well yeah i agree with that, i just doubt it will be the case
Well there is like 3 storylines going on: humans building the transformers, Mark and Optimus/the Autobots hiding, and Lockdown.
ALSO a scene leaked from the movie containing Galvatron and Optimus Prime. It's 11 seconds, and I think it's against the rules if I post it here, so just search "age of extinction scene" on youtube and it's the first result. Nothing too spoiler-y, but you do hear Frank Welker as Galvatron and my god, he sounds awesome as him.

A lot of clips are on the instagram account "transformersfilm_". Go take a look if you want to.
Just got back from seeing it:
absolutely terrible movie. Some of the worst dialogue and acting and story I've seen in modern film.
But goddamn is it hilarious. It's like a big-budget Troll 2 with the added bonus of the fun of robot battles and Dinobots.
Just wondering, but terrible acting from whom?
[editline]25th June 2014[/editline]
Cause I'm getting extremely mixed views from so many people. Either you love it or hate it I guess. I hope I'll enjoy it cause that's all that matters to me.
Like, everyone. I love Marky Mark but he was awful. Everyone else was pretty bad, with the exception of maybe Tucci and especially Grammer (Grammer was surprisingly good). I think a big part of it is just that the script is so deliciously dreadful that they didn't have much to work with.
But I promise you you will enjoy it. Went with a group of 11 and not a single person left the theater dissatisfied. But we also all left the theater laughing our asses off at the dialogue.
Tonight is Transformers: Age of Extinction!!!

Transformers 2's spirtual sequel. I'll still keep my hopes up, I just hope it isn't Transformers 2, or anything like it

This guy doesn't make any sense though. The film in the Transformers franchise that focuses more on the Transformers themselves and actually gives them personalities is still garbage? And the "CGI is shit"? This guy is literally hopping on the bandwagon of the Bay-hatred. Of course he doesn't make great films. But after what happened to ROTF, people have just been jumping on this bandwagon. Don't get me wrong, there is obviously faults in every Transformers film. But this guy is literally ripping this movie to shreds because of Michael Bay. He even rated DOTM higher than this.
I think you're a little too intent on defending this film

Sorry, I'll stop.

I think you should sit down and remember you're talking about a movie that built its entire promotional campaign around a gimmick that appears for approximately 20 minutes of its 165-minute running time.
That's like promoting sex because of the part where you get to take off your clothes.
Sorry, I'll stop.
No, don't be! I'm sorry!
I really appreciate your passion for the film- and believe me I've been there before. I'm just saying I think you're setting yourself up for some major disappointment.
I know what it's like to really want a film to be good (you have no idea how pumped I was for Cowboys & Aliens, Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter, even Godzilla to an extent). But I've learned that it's dangerous to want a film to be good so much that you start scouring for positive praise and arguments against criticism. It keeps you in that overly excited mindset until you see the final product when more than likely you will be disappointed.
I just got back from a showing. I really enjoyed it. If you've enjoyed Transformers in the past, you'll enjoy this one. Some of the writing was spotty and a few special effects were poor, but for the most part the effects were excellent and the action scenes are fantastic. I really was disappointed with the dinobots though. I didn't really feel like they were used to their full potential. If you hated the past Transformers, this one won't change your mind.
8.5/10
[sp]I wasn't a fan of the Megatron side story. I really wished that they would have introduced his story as a cliffhanger or something.[/sp]
Got back from a staff showing a few minutes ago, and I honestly have to say that it was way longer than it should have been. What mr hobo mentioned was sort of glazed over / should have been addressed better near the end - [sp]basically megatron just went "cya ill be back faggots" and it panned back to the main story[/sp]. The effects were cool as always, but honestly it got to a point where it wasn't exhilarating or even interesting to watch some of the fighting near the end. Oh, and IMO about 60% of the [sp]China[/sp] scenes could have been cut, I swear ([sp]him jumping down the rooftops of the apartment/house complex got boring after two minutes[/sp]).
Overall, it wasn't great in my opinion. I'd give it around a 4.5/10 personally.
I just saw it and I have gotta say I'm impressed. Easily better than the last two.
Non-spoiler review:
And I'm back from my showing! My opinion is that this is the best Transformers sequel. A reviewer said that we don't get to see Optimus and Bumblebee until like 40 minutes in, which is totally wrong. Probably 15 minutes in we see him with Cade. Lockdown was introduced in the first 10 minutes. It wasn't even hard to understand the storyline. But, there's basically three going on simultaneously: humans building Transformers, humans hunting Autobots, Autobots and Cade/family hiding. They all connect in the end, and honestly, it did not feel like 3 hours. It went by really fast. This movie has more robot screentime, robot/human interaction, and robot characterization than all other Transformers movies combined. Also the humor was not as sexual or crude as the other ones. The whole theater was laughing at basically every scene TJ Miller was in. I found that I didn't like 3 main things: the first act's pacing was weird. It cut from one storyline to another extremely fast and that's probably what got critics confused. But after that, the pacing is fine. Also I didn't like how they cheated the Transformations with the man-made transformers. Finally, some shots with the humans could definitely be cut completely or made shorter. There was a motorcycle scene that was (sorta) pointless, and Cade fighting Savoy in China was a little meh. Then the whole scene dedicated to showing off the Chinese government (though I think that had to be in there since Bay had to film in China or some shit idk). There weren't too many Mark yelling at Tessa for having a boyfriend scenes, but most of them were pretty funny.
All in all, it was fantastic. Like mr. hobo said, if you enjoyed the last transformers films, you'll love this. Also John Goodman as Hound was amazing.
Spoilers:
[sp]When Grimlock first transforms from robot to dino, Drift just blurts out "I expected a giant car!" That's the humor in this movie--not crude or as sexual. Optimus' reactions to the humans is extremely justifiable, especially after he watches what the humans do to poor Ratchet. I feel the Dinobots had the perfect amount of time. There was already a lot of stuff going on (the seed, Galvatron, Lockdown, etc), so the Dinobots would just add a ton more and make critics go bizarre. Also, Galvatron's screen time was perfect. I'm glad he wasn't utilized, cause it sets him up to be more crazy and badass in the next film, which I assume will happen with the huge amount of mentions about the Quintessons. I'm tired right now so I'll post more later I guess.[/sp]
With its minor plot holes and many storylines, I feel the film redeems itself with the amount of robot dialogue and interactions. The acting and dialogue of the humans were fine too, and more respectable than Shia and the gang from before. 8/10.

OH and there was MLP lmao. Spoilers I guess:
[sp]one of the human scientists is playing with the Transformium metal (allows the metal to "morph" into anything really). He made it go to a MLP figure to a gun.[/sp]

Well MLP is owned by Hasbro and Michael Bay has never been subtle in his references so that doesn't even surprise me.
Oh right, forgot about that.
Also i want to mention that the dance scene that we've seen from the TV spot was not in the film

Despite agreeing in some of his other reviews, this one was terrible. Jahn did not go into detail on why it was terrible. We get that it's a Michael Bay film, but why was it bad again? "It's a Bay film. explosions annoyed me. Dogshit." All I heard throughout the review is that the movie is bad because Bay did his routine again.
I have yet to see it(going to see it tomorrow), but as a moviegoer, I got NOTHING out of this review. It might be the worst thing ever, but this review isn't doing me enough favors.
I liked it.
Here, my friends is IMHO the best way to sum up AOE in a review done by a critic who previously DESPISED the last three.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9485-Transformers-Age-of-Extinction-Better-Than-The-First-Three
I'd take his words, ignoring his history with Transformers and Bay, over Chris or Jeremy's current reviews any day.
@Niven: Well, they don't make theaters like they used to. Call me old fashioned, but I'm glad some theaters in my state are still able to use film.
My thoughts on the film now that I've seen it( a copy/paste of mine from another thread).
8/10
The day that Michael Bay makes a really good TF film(or a great film in general) is nearly here, and it starts here. Say what the critics think about this film, but this was definitely the best of previous 3 and a kick-ass movie. I had tons of fun with this film, despite some of the problems that still lingered.
Pros:
+ The action scenes are crisp and easy to follow with little to no shaky cam.
+ More TF screen time!
+ Cade(Mark Wahlberg) is a ton of fun to watch if you're a fan of the humans. Some of his interactions with his daughter are genuine, if at times really silly.
+ Both the Autobots, the knock-offs, and the baddies all have distinct personalities that really make them stand out whether you saw the other 3 or not.
+ Lockdown and Harold are GREAT villains. Lockdown has this Boba Fett/Terminator vibe to him that really makes him wonderful and creepy at the same time.
+ Galvatron has this decent build-up up to the big reveal and role in the film.
+ Optimus Prime at his good and bad times REALLY bring him down rather than have him be this messiah archetype that a lot of iterations put him in and makes him a REALLY good character.
+ The humor is okay; no toilet humor present.
+/- Little to no Bay-style hot model tracking shots or fanservice(Good or bad depending on you). The only true sexy shot is that of Tessa's legs in the 1st half, and it's only a SPLIT second long.
+ The story was pretty basic and had a really decent flow and did enough to re-work some of the convoluted storylines from the last 3.
+ DAT FINAL BATTLE!
+ Actual heart-rending moments ( In a Michael Bay film, no less).
+ DINOBOTS!! ARE!! AWESOME!! :D
Cons(Most of them are minor):
- "The over-protective father with his daughter and her boyfriend" was strange to have in a TF film.
- Galvatron-despite his build-up had little screen-time to show how his involvement. Missing a scene would leave you thinking that the knock-offs went out-of-control and starting killing humans for no reason.
- The fights between the Autobots and the antagonists (including Galvatron) were REALLY short by the 1st-2nd half compared to the long fight at the end.
- Movie length is a bit huge, with some scenes taking way too long than they should be.
- Crosshairs is a bit of a a-hole to be an Autobot.
+/-Bee STILL doesn't have a voice! He does the radio speak, but it's more used this time and makes him understandable.
- Shane had NO good qualities to why Tessa loves him, and nearly becomes Sam 2.0.
- Tessa is a bit whiny by the time she gets involved. The scene with the anchors makes her feel like Willie from Temple of Doom
- DINOBOTS!! ARE(NOT)!! THAT AWESOME!! :(
-Luca-who?
Overall, a surprisingly good film with some quirks that is worth a ticket or two. Planning on seeing it again in IMAX 3D sometime soon.
