I don't think I had high expectations for it or anything, just that it has become less interesting as time goes on.

Well you can't really fault them, after all the main director died. The first half of the show was great, one of my favorite 'gritty' Gundams besides Victory and Zeta

izetta just ends up being really bland honestly. i thought the setting was interesting and it looks very pretty. but the characters itself are one dimensional and frankly not all that interesting.
and i think thew writers knew, because all the unnecessary fanservice and yuri bait screams "we don't know how to write a complex character"

the romance plot was in episode 1, and the director only died at like the last 2 episodes.
Just because 08th MS Team is set in a jungle doesn't make it particularly gritty, even without the nonsensical romance.
One particular example that springs to mind is Shiro "not a newtype" Amada doing things like this.

I say gritty because of the combat not the story, I don't recall any Gundams before it having oil leaking out when shot or destroyed. The usage of ballistic weapons and explosives as well over just getting gutted by a Beam Rifle instantly. Victory has its exploding reactors and the main suit is constantly replaced with different parts.

I continued reading on past where the anime ended and it got pretty hype (light novel spoilers) [sp]although it's still basically "daily lives of sad people."[/sp] The translation got taken down because the books got licensed, but (more ln spoilers) [sp]at the point I left off in book 4, we haven't had much more than them trying to survive/character development for the others in the group, although there have been hints of something more in the background[/sp]

One of my favs is War in the Pocket. Little 6 episode thing with [I]no newtypes[/I] and a story that isn't total crap.
It was also cool to see the first MS with the panoramic cockpit setup.

Suzaku's Lancelot was practically that from the start anyway with how absurdly setting-breakingly overpowered it is compared to everybody else's KMFs. It's got beam shields and vibration/heat swords in an area of ballistic weaponry and people using regular-ass lances as melee weapons Everybody's running around in their Zaku 2s and suddenly somebody rolls up to the battlefield in a V2 that doesn't look like it belongs in the same century as the rest rendering any team-based strategy useless and made most of the battles depend mostly on 1-2 ace pilots.
The only difference is that it made pretenses of not being like that and had more effort put into the battles.
