Finished [I]Fate/Zero[/I]. I didn't expect Season 2 to be a huge roller coaster of emotions moreso than UBW imo. It started with [sp]Kiritsugu Emiya's origin story[/sp], then ended with [sp]him finding Shiro.[/sp] I anticipated this ride as its a prequel, but man I did not expect to well up a little. Then again, what went on afterwards I'm glad that I was able to see what happened next. Didn't know [sp]Gilgamesh and Kirei to become immortal. It also sucks that Emiya had to betray the woman and child that he loved to save the world. I'd like to think the Holy Grail corrupted Irisviel when she became a vessel. Wish their daughter knew the full story before the shit that goes down in the next Holy Grail War.[/sp]
[I]Fate/Zero[/I] gets an [B]A.[/B]
Best Servants:
1. Rider, aka [sp]Iskander the Great[/sp] I just love that they used his Persian pronunciation or close to his Greek one instead of the English one. Makes it feel more authentic that way imo. His interactions with Waver, Saber, and Archer were the best parts.
2. Saber and Berserker. I like the interactions between them, and how it all pays out.
3. Archer.
4. Lancer. An Irish Heroic Spirit? True to his myth? Give him a bit more scenes and I would have been sold!
5. Caster. Creepy dude. Not much happens with him and the others but he had a spectacular end.
Best Humans.
1. Kiritsugu Emiya. He's probably my favorite character in the Fate series so far. He's just brimming with character.
2. Kirei Kotomine. What a lovable jackass. He's just the guy you love to hate.
3. Waver Velvet *snicker*. He's not much of a fighter like the others, but his ambition and his interactions with Rider are some of the best parts in the show.
4. Irisviel. Pure Cinnamon Roll with loyalty and determination that has no bounds. She and Kiritsugu are pure sugar together.
5. That seriel killer guy. Freaky character like his servant Caster. Didn't like him as the others, but [sp]I did like his exit.[/sp]

maddogsamurai, since you liked F/Z and UBW I think you're in a good position to read the FSN visual novel now. I highly recommend that you acquire a copy of it and play it yourself. There are LPs of it but they don't offer the complete experience the visual novel does in terms of music and animation. The prose may be a little janky at times, but the story, characters and the way the three routes parallel each other and how the main character's development is tied to them are something that any prospective Fate fan should not miss out.
Or you could wait for all the Heavens Feels movies to come out and then pine there won't be a decent Fate adaption ever :(

I'll definitely give the visual novel a go. This will be my first one too so this should be interesting. I didn't expect to like the series this much, but the two shows blew away my expectations and now I'm gonna dive into the thick of it.

A few quick tips then:
1. FSN is pretty damn long! Expect lots of reading. Make sure to read things carefully.
2. There are three routes for the three main heroines and each one is unlocked after finishing the preceeding one: Fate -> Unlimited Blade Works -> Heaven's Feel
3. Choose your choices carefully.
4. Additional worldbuilding stuff is placed inside the status screen so make sure to check it when it updates.
Save after every choice too.

That show's gimmick was the DARK TWIST which happens pretty much immediately.
Ryokou is about getting along with the feeling of hopelessness because the world is dead and there's no end-game, not "watch the moe girls suffer". [url=https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_no_aware]~Mono no aware~[/url] if you want to be fancy about it.
Having a big grimdark moment that changes the dynamic of the show would be against the point.

my whole deal is that i typically like to go into a show knowing absolutely nothing about it so I was unaware of the gimmick when i fired up ryokou. I find I enjoy things more when I have absolutely no expectations

There's a fan translation out there i'd look for that adds all the stuff from realta nua (the PS2 version) while also keeping the censored scenes (the H-scenes) and adding in effects from fate hollow ataraxia
Once you've read all 3 routes you're ready for Apocrypha.

There are several good OP's and ED's this season. Shuumatsu, Magus bride, Juuni taisen, Net juu susume, Blend S (haha yeah), Houseki no kuni.
There isn't so clear winner imo this season. Just agree that this season is good.

It's based on a book written by Project Itoh who was friends with Hideo Kojima and it shows. It has some MGS4 vibes to it with these high tech special ops soldiers that have emotion regulators and bio-mechanical equipment which makes me think that there was some cross pollination between these two projects. Itoh did end up writing the Japanese novelization for MGS4 as well, but unfortunately passed away due to cancer. Some of his other works, such as Harmony and Empire of Corpses, were also adapted into anime

EoC had some of the most interesting world building that was ruined by the plot actually happening, which took away from having us see more of the way the world worked.
Harmony was just downright dull.
